Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony's innovations to gaming.

Apparently PlayStation's innovations are good enough to be copied by the innovator of them all (Nintendo)... I like PlayStation and Nintendo consoles equally so no offence.

Funny post and some fair points there, but nordic games are nothing to do with Nintendo, they were an offshoot of THQ.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Sony doesn't innovate, they set the standards

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Is this a two kilobyte card? Holy crap.

If I remember correctly they had a deal with Nintendo to make these games exclusively for Wii. Just like the one Sony had with Relentless Software (Buzz!) and Nintendo have with FreeStyleGames (Sing Party) and Joysound (Wii Karaoke U).

But I get what you're saying.

They made gaming "cool"

Sony has greatly contributed but I, as a Sega fan, must point out that Sega came out with the Dreameye for Dreamcast in 2000, which was used in two games :).

B-But according to the Nintendo fanboys Sony copied everything from the almighty 'N'.

CD based gaming, dual analog sticks, music and rythm games, first to make console cool among young adults

@bold they weren't the first

@underlined Which console are you talking about tho? and how do you determine cool? or what a young adult is, that isn't really something that Sony brought to the market.

@bold + underlined - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance_Aerobics

CD based gaming started with PS1, others may have experimented earlier but PS1 was the first console that made it popular. Sega would have probably gone with cartridges too like NIntendo if Sony didnt enter the market. Sony came and innovated, Nintendo was stubborn.

PS1 ads targeted young adults and the games were darker and more adult oriented than the competition. There was Tekken, Tomb Raider, MGS, Driver, Syphon Filter, FF7, Gran Turismo. Gaming was seen as kids toys before Playstation. PS1 is the first console that made console gaming mainstream breaking 100m units sold. The globalization of gaming continued further with PS2.

Without Playstation the industry would've probably crashed in the late 90s/early 00s, Xbox wouldn't exist becuz Sony didnt enter the market, we would have used VHS and cartridges much longer.

Hey guys, thought we could compile a list of things Sony have pioneered that have become staples in gaming and have been followed since. These are just some I could think of and they might not be totally accurate, looking for corrections and additions :P

First DVD enabled console(PS2)
First blu ray enabled console(PS3)
First controller to have 4 shoulder buttons
First controller to have twin analog sticks(twin flight sticks don't really count)
First controller to have clickable analog sticks(L3 and R3)
First controller to have analog pressure button(PS2/PS3. Xbox OG copied this, ultimately dropped with the 360/PS4).
First console to contain USB ports(PS2 onwards)
Eyetoy(PS2)
First console to output HD(PS2 with GT4)

What else?

when you need to add completely irrelevant stuff like movie support and USB ports to "innovations to gaming" and the other half of your list is "added another one of already existing things" then the list is pretty  sad imo.
