Good luck recouping those development costs on such a small userbase. I think the game became FFXV a while ago.

Lol did you just say Final Fantasy has a small userbase?

I think he means that PS4 will have a small userbase.

Going by that logic no game developer would make games for a console in the first year.

Well, look at WiiU.

But another thought: if SquareEnix needs another 8 years, the userbase of PS4 will be big enough. Although I think the budget will only increase over time ...

LOL, I would think a 120M budget is hard to recover even for a FF on PS3 and X360 with >70M install base each. But exclusively to PS4 it will not sell enough to break even, not to talk about profit.
If that rumor is true, that would mean SquareEnix is begging for insolvency. Or that Falcom is buying them. Hmm, SquareFalcomEnix.

OR.....
Sony paid a lot of money to get it exclusively to PS4. At this budget we talk about a really big moneyhat. At least 50M, but 80M seems more likely regarding the loss in sales on a new platform. But that would mean Sony is begging for bankrupty...

OR...
We assume for a moment that both companies aren't completely out of their mind and this rumor is probably untrue. Which seems to be the best explanation.

Sony paid for it to be a PS3 exclusive, It will be made for PS4 because SE couldn't release it on time for PS3.  They won't put more money on this because of SE incompetence.

I have the impression SE wanted to make this game multiplatform, but they are in debt with Sony now.

Also the person who posted this Rumour on neogaf did not explain if the 120M budget is for the whole project (Originally intended PS3 game + PS4 convertion) or for the PS4 version alone.

Is this a fact, speculation or are you speaking in hypothetical terms?

It's pure speculation just like this whole thread.

But FF Versus XIII was announced in 2006.   Do you think Sony paid for a PS4 title even before PS3 was released ?

Nope, but they could have moneyhat a game in development last year for PS4.

That said, nobody knows if this game exists.  At all.  And frankly, I'm gonna assume that the PS4 FF that they'll probably highlight at E3 will be multiplat.  And be on other consoles:  720 and WiiU included.

With a budget like that the game can no longer afford to stay an Sony exclusive,90% chance it will be on the next Xbox now and they might even throw the Wii U a bone with that budget. It stupid mistakes like this that will be the end of Square and the reason why the Final Fantasy brand is falling from grace.

Throw a bone?

Terrible rumor if true.

120million is too much and high risk for SE. Hopefully Sony is helping them out with this budget, otherwise high risk of going under.

LOL @ people who don't think this can profit. Release in Holiday 2014 and Japan sales will be 1.8mil first week. Seconly, this game can charge $70 per game and have a secial edition for $100 people would pay for that would be like 10% of total sales. Also, they can put it on the PSN and get more money than reail that could be about 10% of sales too.

If this rumor is true SE can make 80mil on first week sales in Japan alone.

If making a game exclusively for the PS4 is suicidal because it has a user base of 0, then making it for the PS4, Nextbox, and Wii U can't be so smart, either, because 3 x 0 = 0.

So, now that I addressed the doubts of the budget I will address the doubts of exclusivity.

First of all this was announced exclusive for Ps3. I don't know why people would doubt it being exclusive unless otherwise stated by SE. Secondly, if it moved to Ps4 and sticks to being exclusive then SE probably figures the sales were just divided between the two platforms and really didn't increase sales of the series like they wanted. Also, exclusive titles gets the hype for being exclusive.

Taking bets at E3.

If the rumor turns out to be true I win. If it turns out to be false, you lose.
