Forums - Sales - Has the Wii become one of the biggest disappointments in gaming?

Ok let's throw out all this shit about fanboyism and what not and really get down to this. I'm asking this to the hardcore Nintendo fans and the non Nintendo fans, has the Wii not become one of the biggest disappointments of gaming?

When the Wii released it was a hit, everyone loved it and it sold like crazy. But something happened, and sales significantly dropped more then any leading console has ever done in gaming. What's happened? A few things actually. Nintendo got to over confident with the Wii usually once the company finds out there console is the highest selling this gen they can just sit back and let the money roll in for the next 4 or 5 years. Sure this would of been fine any other gen, usually when the leader is determined developers just flock to the console but Sony and Microsoft made that FAR from easy, taking many huge games from it.

In the end the ignorance of the Wiis creators and lack of 3rd party support turned the Wii into something a leading gaming console has never been, a gimick (I think Nintendo's forgotten what a leading console is suppose to be). Not gonna say the Wii was entirely useless though, it has brought a huge range of people into the gaming market, ie the gamers that were never gamers (old people) and a lot of young children. Which is great the more people into gaming the better for the industry. But by the time Nintendo began to compete it was too late, Sony and Microsoft had way to much going for them.

So now a 3rd place console, and a console that is 1 year older the Wii is now outselling the leader for the gen, something that's never happened before. It's kind of embarrasing for Nintendo, they let to much go to there head and completely ignored the competition which was the cause of there downfall. Hopefully they make a big improvement on the Wii-U.

Obviously a thread made by someone who has never played more than one Wii game. I enjoyed it more than the GC.

I've played many Wii games. But it's not about Nintendo's first party games, everyone that buys the console will always buy these games but overall as a console leader for the gen it was a huge failure.

i play my Wii more than my PS3 and as a nintendo fan its because it has the games that i want. It was always thought that once HD tvs became more common the Wii would fall out of favour and it has. But as a console itself it is a success if you like Nintendo games and if you liked to play games in a group ie wii sports.

I do agree with BasilZero in the case of the N64 though. Best console of all time IMO

I know when Wii was announced I was super excited. It really looked like a revolution, but then I found out that it wasn't nearly as cool as it looked. Long story short, I never bought a Wii.

Have you played it? If not maybe you should try it. There are lots of games out there that are great to play  and the Wii is  really cheap now.

I'll agree with you, to some extent.

The Wii as the generation leader is indeed a failure. It just doesn't have the support expected from a leading console. Simple as that.

As an actual console, though, it was still successful - mostly due to the first party Nintendo games. Not to mention the fact that it introduced motion gaming, if not due to the Wii's sales neither Microsoft or Sony would have attempted to jump on the motion gaming bandwagon themselves.

Yes, it was a "disappointment." And no I'm not saying this just to please you. The Wii did great in sales and the Wii did great in games. Nintendo supported the Wii enough. (Just like they do with practically all their consoles.) And 3rd part support was quite good. Most of those games were shovel-ware though, I admit to that. But! The ones that aren't are quite well received and are great fun. So what if they didn't sell as much as the first party titles did/do? They are there, that's what matters. It's not up to the developers or Nintendo to sell a game. It's all about the consumer. If the consumer doesn't look for games than they won't sell. There is the downfall of the Wii. All most all of it's owners are your described old people and little, little kids. They don't look for games! All they see are the games that look "fun" or have commercials or have Wii in the title. The Wii was a good console, it had games and it had the sales, it just didn't have the staying power.

I'm willing to acknowledge Nintendo dropped the ball but not for the reasons most think.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Yes, it is the most disappointing console I have ever bought.

I used to be a Nintendo fan first, I bought the Wii on launch, just as I had bought the Gameboy Colour, Gamecube, Gameboy Advance, original DS and even the Gameboy Micro on launch day, something I'd never do for other companies.

I ended up selling the Wii in 2008 and buying a PS3. I have every other Nintendo console in the house, except SNES and Virtual Boy.

I really loved the motion controls that the Wii brought to the table, and I have countless fond memories of playing all sorts of Wii games with my friends and family. Hell, I have lots of fond memories of playing that "look-alike Mii" game on the system dashboard as well as the popular question one. Lots of fun times. =)

Not a disappointment to me at all.
