Yeah, I'm not screwed over by this in the slightest.
I think I'll survive if I can't copy a BD.

"managed copy apparently can't be added with a mere firmware upgrade." You'll need a new player. Unless Sony says otherwise in an official statement. It's called being an early adopter. You lose out.

I doubt this would affect PS3. The issue is the BR player needs a way to make the copy available - which a lot of standalone BR players probably will struggle with, but the PS3 has USB ports and a HDD - I don't see any issue getting the managed copy feature via a firmware update and then having the new firmware make a copy to HDD or directly to another device (PSP anyone?) via USB ports.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Blu-ray discs get Managed Copy, hardware support nonexistent. Yet another reason why blue ray is a crock. I personally am sick and tired of this BS now and just wish BR would disappear. Why all the headache when I just want to watch a freakin movie and they keep moving the goal posts!!

Well since your words will have NO effect on me or anyone else who just sticks a dick in a slot to see what happens, I will take my leave of you, good day.
ironman - you have no clue what you are talking about. My point is even though Sony doesn't have the biggest chunk of Blu-ray royalties they have the most to gain and gain the most from it. They are the only company that makes A. Blu-ray discs. (You know what they put the movies on? Yeah... if its a Sony disc Sony is already getting more money than everyone else with royalties) B. Blu-ray players. And C. A movie studio that massively supports blu-ray. I love how you conveniently only single out blu-ray players when all along ive been mentioning 3 things. Sony doesn't need to split their profits from Discs, players, or movies to the people with a stake in Blu-ray like you are suggesting.
| ironman said: @CTA, so be it, but the codec is still used, and as I said before, I believe MS actually owns some stock in Bluray. Even still, this is straying far from the OP. MS doesn't have as large a hand in the pot as other companies, but nobody was saying that. I believe Panasonic is the company that stands to make the most money. |
As far as I can tell, MS is neither part of the BDA, nor the list of active participants in developing the format. The key technologies (for the discs) seem to have been developed by Sony and Pioneer. Other companies are involved in codecs and formats, of course, but that wouldn't change no matter what form of distribution you used.
Why you think Sony wouldn't make more money of BD, when they own more of the patents used, I don't know.
As for the OP, he's pretty trollish.

Typo of the year!
On a serious note: thank god they never came out with new DVD technology either. I love how from day 1, I could copy my DVDs and burn them onto new DVD discs. I loved how I didn't need to buy a special DVD player afterwards if I wanted to do that, or if I wanted to record from the TV onto a hard-drive....oh wait, I did. So were we all screwed over by DVD? In that case, why don't you go back to VHS...oh wait, same again.
I have a 486 with a top of the line 3Dfx card, but I still can't play Crysis. Why? Because I'm SCREWED by the PC industry!!!

Sony is NOT the only one making Bluray discs, to assume so is ignorant. Also, you completely fail to see my point. With every Movie disc Sony makes, they pay royalties to the other companies. Sony is eating all the manufacturing costs, and the shipping costs. and all other costs associated with producing hard media. While the other companies sit idly by and collect $ from Sony. PLUS Sony IS NOT THE ONLY PEOPLE MAKING BLURAY PLAYERS. Thus, your point about the Bluray players is completely moot, you are really just trying to hard at this point. Oh and lets not forget, the movie studio that is backing Bluray is not backing Sony, it is backing Bluray, so that too is a weak point. Sony does split all Bluray profits because they must pay royalties to all the other companies, honestly, do you even have a clue how this whole thing works? So far, it doesn't seem like it.

I think he meant that they are the only one who are doing ALL 3 (making discs, players and movies).

Let me know if I am reading this right, ok?
You reckon Sony are the only ones making BD physical discs for movies? They are the only ones making BD players? They are the movie studio that is supporting BD the most?
Now, I apologise if I have read this wrong. If I have read it right, all I can say is that you are blatantly wrong.
