Forums - Nintendo - Could the Wii be upgraded like N64 (expansion pack) and Genesis (cd + 32x)

I don't think Nintendo is going to bother with an upconversion for the Wii they will address HD compatibility with the WiiHD in 2011. The Wii doesn't have a fast enough architecture to move or process an HD signal so any upconversion unit would pretty much need to be a HD game system on its own. Nintendo isn't going to want to waste money on in house competition for its future HD market. The SDWii has an exclusive market with older people who don't have the visual acuity to care about an HD offering. Even as SDWii sales continue to decline over the next two years Sony and MS still have a HUGE deficit to fill before 2011 just to catch up and by then they will have to contend with Nintendo's next offering.

As for Natal in my opinion it is going to be a failure unless it is bundled with every 360 sold after it is introduced. As a stand alone accessory I don't see it doing well with the "anti-waggle" crowd I mean this is full body waggle system and it doesn't have any form of tactile feedback.

The Wiimote has rumble and a built in speaker to add to the immersion. With Natal how do you change weapons or views... with voice recognition? That will get old real quick if you don't think so try it with your favorite game now. Every time you have to push a button say "fire", "change weapon" , "change view", "crouch" or "jump" or whatever I guarantee you won't like keeping it up until the end of the game. Not to mention I can push buttons a lot faster than I can talk. When I play a fishing game on the Wii I can feel the fish strike the hook and I can feel and hear the drag run out is Natal going to do that to your coffee cup? If you are playing a fighting game how do you know if you got hit or landed a blow other than with visual cues? If I like I can play most every Wii game sitting down can the same be said for Natal?

I just don't see all the people that laughed at the "waggle fad" hopping on the full body waggle bus especially if it costs $100 bucks or better to ride and it's bundled with MS Milo & Millie

If this early, they make a new wii and it's considered a new console that replaces the old one, then the ps2 beats the wii in sales.

I would be surprised if nintendo would allow that to happen, because the wii could outsell the ps2 based on the pace if it is out long enough.

If Nintendo do something like that, it will be an epic fail!!

If they go the route of making games that can run in HD but don't have to, they can keep the wii on the market with a hardware upgrade and have the HD wii count towards the sales of wii.

Just like the ps3 changes hard drive size, it doesn't have to considered a new console.

I disagree about Sega.

Sega released those add-ons as a response to the fact that Nintendo was outselling them.

It's not like Sega was kicking Nintendo in the rear, and then released the add-ons, and then lost.

Sega had 52% market share at the end of 1993. Then they released the 32X and Nintedo released Donkey Kong Country and Sega's sales imploded.

At least that's how I have understood it. May Dissolitude strike me down if I'm wrong.

But they had a head start.

NO!

It's simply, the wii has no dedicated expansion port for any such upgrades, and no USB can not be used either, the only thing the USB could potentially be used for, and that's if Nintendo allowed it, is HDD support with seamless integration so that it acts as part of the system rather than an add on.

Sorry clicked on the post with out typing a comment.

Its not possible since many have said the 2.0 Universal Serial Bus can't transfer a lot of data. The NES, SNES and N64 were possible due to the cartrigde connecting directly to the systems motherboard through a slot. The NES and SNES were able to use external co-processors by attaching them in the game pak. The N64 Expansion Pak also connected to the mother board to give it the extra bump in graphics.

Megadrive had a head start, but when the Super Nintendo launched it outsold the MegaDrive. And when the MegaDrive got Sonic, it outsold the Super Nintendo.

After that marketshare went back and fourth, and in the end of 1993 Sega had 52% marketshare.

And after that they made some stupid desicions with the 32X and Saturn and imploded at the same time that Nintendo released DKC.

That 52% is misleading.

Sega released in  1989, the SNES was  in 1991, two years later. So in 1993 Sega had 4 years on the market, while SNES had 2, and Nintendo had already cut their share in half. Segas sales didn't implode at all, just the SNES was so much more successful.

It would be the equivalent of saying the xbox in early 2007 had much more marketshare than Nintendo, but since Nintendo released _____ and Xbox sales imploded and Wii took the lead.
