Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Visceral Games:"Shame no one bought DS:Extraction, Wii support reconsidered

It is a shame no one bought this game, i had a chance to play it and it was awesome. No wonder developers stick to their shovelware, it sells..

or when Resident Evil 4 became the most profitable PORT EVER.

Where the evidence of this?  RE4 PS2 port sold 3 million and released at full price.  RE4 Wii port has barely sold half of that and released at a budget price, thus making less money per copy sold.

You know, I think KylieDog just owned you....

Like he said, Re4 PS2 was a port and sold a lot more and was even GoTY for a few outlets the year it released...

Oh come on, we all know RE4 and Okami were both DIRTY CHEAP ports.

And took nearly a year to downgrade to run on the PS2 hardware most of the graphics were drastically changed, the Wii port was the exact same assets as the Gamecube game (lighting, textures, etc) and only added in the extra content from the PS2 game and a IR pointer on screen, neither of which are developer intensive as going in and changing the models, cut scenes, the whole real time lighting structure, textures, so on and so forth, it very well could have cost Capcom more to change an entire game to run on the PS2 >_>

Still, 3M copies giving on average ~$15 each amounts to ~$45M for the publisher.

The cost of a game on the PS2 from the ground up was in the $6-10M range, and I'm sure we can agree that the porting must have cost way less than that maximum. Thus we're talking of $37-42M profit here. Let's say it's  around $40M.

The Wii port sold 1.6M, at budget price. Thus something like 1.6M x ~$12 = ~$19.2M. Even considering a very minimal cost for the porting (~$1M), we're still talking of barely half the profit of the PS2 port.

So wait.

Dead Space sells 1.5 million+ and it's a failure, but MadWorld, The Conduit, Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes and Muramasa sell less than that combined... and they're all individual successes?

I think I'm gonna go ahead and develop a Wii game myself. Apparently they only cost a bag of peanuts to make and turn a profit no matter how badly they sell.

The only reason why people are claiming 1.5 was a "failure" is due to EA themselves coming out and saying they lost money which in the business world is a failed project. Sega has come out to say they were happy with the sales of The Conduit and Madworld at one point or another.  Suda 51 was really happy with how No More Heroes sold because it sold better than any of his past gameson the Gamecube and the PS2, which is why there's a sequel coming.

As for Zack and Wiki a couple of Capcom guys came out to say they were dissatisfied so that one can be seen as a failed project.

Some of the best ways to look at it budget vs profit and expected sales vs actual sales.  EA obviously was expecting more sales of Dead Space and lost money in failed on both ends, The Conduit and MadWorld didn't reach expected sales I'm certain but if they're making money the business is happy.  And No More Heroes surpassed sales and made money so Suda 51 is probably really happy.

When did EA ever say Dead Space lost money? The producer or something once said he wishes it sold more but was satisfied with what it did sell.

EA heads discussed how Mirror's Edge and Dead Space got good reviews, but sold under expectations. And as for the game comparisons, why are you comparing sales of an HD game to sales of Wii games, and not taking the development cost differentials into account?

I think that selling under expectations and losing money can be two different things. I think EA wanted to turn Dead Space and Mirror's Edge into big franchises. That obviously did not happen.

I don't like Starfox, I've only ever played Command, it sucked.

I'm so sorry. My childhood was consumed with hours upon hours of Star Fox 64 and Smash Smash Bros.

its an on rails shooter... true abysmal sales even for an on rails shooter, but still you'd think companies would actually make a game that can appeal to both mainstream and hardcore...

even if the Wii port was totally free, Re4 PS2 made more money...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

I am so glad this happened should teach EA that  most wii players would wii their pants from a game like deadspace. Seriously though,  this is a great example to the industry that mature rated games just don't sell for the Wii. I hope they take it to heart and keep mature games on mature consles. Just my opinion sorry.

Yes because every copy of RE4 PS2 was sold at full price <_< it couldn't be that part of those were the greatest hits and the Resident Evil essentals collection?  I don't know the budgets of either but to make it an open and shut case like everyone is making it is just stupid.

Let's also consider the fact that Re4 on PS2 is still outselling the Wii version on the weekly charts.

EDIT: Not quite, but it's still very close.
