I'm going to be optimistic. The last true mario sequel to a mario game on the same console we got was Super Mario Bros 3, and it's better than the first. 97+

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Yoshi's Story? (which admittedly has some pretty fervent supporters on this site)  Yoshi's Island was an awesome game, the only thing that dropped it below 2D platforming perfection for me was Mario's really annoying crying sound.
