Forums - Gaming - Why Sony is Surpassing Nintendo in Game Development?

No More Heroes would have done better. Why? Because it is a mature-themed game with a lot of gunplay and a cute chick. Just look at recent sales of Yakuza 3 in Japan in one week. They are pretty much equal to NMH's worldwide even though NMH was one of the most praised games of the last year Nintendo fans wouldn't buy it.

Both Okami and Zack and Wiki would have been hard to sell on any console because Okami is highly artistic and Zack and Wiki looks very kiddy and most fans of old graphic adventures, like myself, probably don't know what it is or probably think it's a platformer knock off of Jak and Daxter which is what I thought it was until I read that it was a graphic adventure.

But NMH had pop culture sensibilities and if it had been on 360, then we'd probably be reading about how the movie version directed by Quentin Tarantino would be getting ready to come out this Summer.

Interesting.  A lot of gunplay?  I thought that it was a lot of sword play.  Hmmm.

Tarantino would not direct a movie based on a video game that is influenced by his movies.  He leaves that to people like Uwe Boll.

Believe it or not I almost changed to Uwe Boll.  But, really, he seems to mainly direct horror movies and not pulp fiction type films.  And one can be hopeful if not Tarantino himself then maybe Rodriguez or at least somebody that works for Troublemaker Studios.

Sony definitely has a great development team along with some other companies within them, but this is a weak argument. In a lot of ways you make Sony look weak with this argument and Nintendo as well.

I don't think Sony is on the same level as Nintendo or coming close to surpassing them, but you could have made a better argument towards it. Although I greatly disagree with the new franchises one because Nintendo has continuously done that and that's evident even today. Don't even need to list them.

This article was basically a trojan horse for Wii bashing. "Wii sucks, Nintendo must work on Wii, therefore Nintendo is diminished"

I still don't see what's so great about new IPs. There's a world of difference between long-running franchises that constantly evolve (like Mario and Zelda), and those that only boast incremental changes (like Fire Emblem). To say that it doesn't count because its a sequel throws all notions of gameplay out the window

That being said, Sony does have some strong development teams. Insomniac, Naughty Dog, and Team ICO are some of the best in the industry

With regards to new franchises, I believe that Sony is forced to create new franchises to survive, whereas Nintendo can take their time to create new ones, since they can reuse old ones. How can Nintendo reuse old ones, while Sony can't? Because Sony releases sequels far too soon.

Take, for example, the main platformer for both consoles: Mario and Ratchet. How often do you see a new Ratchet platformer? Pretty much every year. Mario usually only comes out once every generation.

With Ratchet coming out every year, the fans of Ratchet will begin to anticipate it less, and less and become less excited for each new release. At some point, Sony will deem it an unprofitable IP, and retire it, or sell it off (a la Crash). Nintendo doesn't have that problem, as the sequels for most of their series are a few years apart, which ensures that fans of the series are still excited for each and every new entry into the series, whether it be Mario, Zelda or Metroid.

I also don't understand why only "hardcore" franchises only count when looking at new franchises. I also don't see what the other 4 points have to do with game development directly.

it's better that way, we get better and fresher ideas each time and new characters, if sony were like nintendo crash would  be still around a marvelous game like LBP would have never happen, it was too risky.

as for nintendo

mario is getting stars, link still saving hyrule, and mario got a online mode now. but not really much have change in them.

gran turismo is bigger than Halo i am pretty sure you know that.

Perhaps you get better/fresher ideas............but a vast majority of PS3 fans have been excited for old franchises (MGS4, GTA4, FF13, GT5, etc.). It seems to me that the vast majority of PS3 fans don't really care about new and fresh. If Sony was like Nintendo, Crash might still be important in the video gaming world, rather than a shell of his former self. And you are suggesting that risks would not be taken if Sony was like Nintendo? Risks like........I dunno, the wii? Forget risky games like Wii Fit, and Wii Music.........the Wii, and the DS, are very large risks and fresh ideas that were taken by Nintendo.

Mario/Link has got as big a change in their successful formulas as the aforementioned games that excite PS3 fans.....so I don't know where you are going with that.

I don't know what your last point has to do with any of my points. If anything, you should dislike the "old and tired" Gran Turismo, since it's more in the vein of Nintendo like thinking, rather than Sony. In fact, you should be excited more for Motorstorm 2, than you are for GT5, since Motorstorm is a "new, fresh and better" franchise.

I think Sony has to release new IPs (first party and second party) since they did not have a big library of old franchises to update.

From the last two generations, I see Gran Turismo, SOCOM, God of Wars, Everybody's Golf, Ratchet & Clank, Jak, Spyro and Crash. SOCOM, Everybody's Golf, and Ratchet & Clank were already updated without much scucess. Crash and Spyro are no longer Sony's property. Gran Turismo and God of Wars franchises are being updated.

Also, I would think Sony cashes in new franchise more often than Nintendo. Resistence and Motorstorm were new franchises released in the first 6 months of PS3 launch and both sequals were already released last holiday season. Wii Sports and Wii Play were released in the first 6 months of Wii launch but they have yet to have any sequals.

I also don't understand how anyone could discount Wii series games as not new ideas because of this and that or How Mario/Link games are all the same. In such cases, barely any new releases would qualify as new ideas since most games are asking the users to make it from point A to point B by going go through obstacles and accomplish some objectives.

LBP -  a 2D platformer at heart but allows you to share content (2D platformer has been around for a long time and Blast Works allows you to share content too. So both ideas were not new)

Resistence - FPS fighting against aliens (not new)

Uncharted - third person adventure games (As someone earlier put it, Larry Craft. not new)

Motorsotrm - an off road racing game (there were ATV offraod racing on previous Sony consoles. not new)

etc.

As for the arguement on NMH would be more successful on HD consoles, same arguement can be made for LBP on Wii since it is totally catered for the main demographic for Wii. Suda 51 is comfortable with the developement environment, especially the control, on Wii. Just like how Media Molecule is comfortable with PS3 and there is nothing wrong with that.

Special thanks to mike and bardicverse to point out what kind of source associated content is!

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

I'm not sure I get your point on Wii Sports since you are saying that the new IPs are making you to pay for hardware that will let you play said games. So you are saying it is wrong for Nintendo making you pay for Wii in order to play Wii Sports?

NPD TIME -

"Wii 687,000
Nintendo DS 536,800
Xbox 360 347,200
PSP 238,100
PlayStation 3 232,400
PlayStation 2 173,500

Do you know what the NPD numbers REALLY say? What does it REALLY MEAN when Wii and DS keep topping the sales charts beyond their competitors?
It means, VERY SOON, Nintendo will release a Wii HD.
Nintendo will make all those Wii systems out there obsolete and put out a Wii HD. Nintendo will scrap the development cost advantage the Wii has to make their HD system. Everyone knows that the biggest constraint to Wii sales is the lack of HD graphics for Wii Music, Wii Fit, Wii Sports, and other games. How on earth can anyone enjoy Wii games without HD displays? Even though HD installed base is not really the majority position, Nintendo needs to stop doing what they are doing and start making games for the minority of television sets. Nintendo needs to EMULATE the LOSING CONSOLES of this generation and adopt all their features! It is because we all know that once the HD consoles come below the price range of the Wii, they are going to take off with sales that go UP, UP, UP!
Nintendo needs to make a Wii HD now or risk collapse!!!! This is what the NPD numbers mean."

Not quite wrong. Every business means you want to make a profit. My point is, hardware + bundled games are thre to make easy money, while creating the perception that its a quite popular game (as in: "wow I love Wii Sports! Every body is playing it!" then it apears non hardcore gamer/casual who rarely (if ever) go to the internets to research anything about its humorous passtime: "Wow! It must be good because everyone plays it! Look at those huge sale numbers on VGChartz! Best selling game ever = win! I will spam this to my other friends!" And so on. (this was a hipotetical anedote, wich only reason to be was humorous fun about a possible, nah..not so quite, situation.

I know it wasnt bundled in Japan, but it is in the rest of the world (from what I gatter ini this same thread). Where Wii are still selling strong? EU and US. In Japan, either because of the recession that hit it hard, or maybe because of saturation, even lack of games (wait for summer right? Im patiently waiting.). Choose your reason.

The point is people forgot Nintendo mistakes of the past (to name a few: made quite hard to 3rd party to sell on their consoles going straight against Nintendo thenselves in software sales, arrogance, selfcentered choices that would make profitability a certainty, but at the cost of the value/quality of its games). Sony made some of the same mistakes this gen, now its in last place. Nintendo is back on top, but it can fall again.

Thats my main point. Learn with your past mistakes, or you'll end up suffering because of them again. As I see, Nintendo motto is 'since my consoles prints money, I dont care about quality or my loyal fanbase (will inject lots shovelware, with a few good games once in a while, into their a*****) , my trendy casuals will sure keep buying them in spades. Hurrah for my money printers!"

Shovelware companies agrees whole heartedly. There may be a bunch of interesting games coming out to Wii, but they may sell less than said shovelware and bundle games (wich because they''re bundled, and Wii is cheap and fun (wich is not my opinion) to play, will see uber numbers. Nintendo smiles happily either way.
