With regards to new franchises, I believe that Sony is forced to create new franchises to survive, whereas Nintendo can take their time to create new ones, since they can reuse old ones. How can Nintendo reuse old ones, while Sony can't? Because Sony releases sequels far too soon.

Take, for example, the main platformer for both consoles: Mario and Ratchet. How often do you see a new Ratchet platformer? Pretty much every year. Mario usually only comes out once every generation.

With Ratchet coming out every year, the fans of Ratchet will begin to anticipate it less, and less and become less excited for each new release. At some point, Sony will deem it an unprofitable IP, and retire it, or sell it off (a la Crash). Nintendo doesn't have that problem, as the sequels for most of their series are a few years apart, which ensures that fans of the series are still excited for each and every new entry into the series, whether it be Mario, Zelda or Metroid.

I also don't understand why only "hardcore" franchises only count when looking at new franchises. I also don't see what the other 4 points have to do with game development directly.

it's better that way, we get better and fresher ideas each time and new characters, if sony were like nintendo crash would  be still around a marvelous game like LBP would have never happen, it was too risky.

as for nintendo

mario is getting stars, link still saving hyrule, and mario got a online mode now. but not really much have change in them.

gran turismo is bigger than Halo i am pretty sure you know that.

Perhaps you get better/fresher ideas............but a vast majority of PS3 fans have been excited for old franchises (MGS4, GTA4, FF13, GT5, etc.). It seems to me that the vast majority of PS3 fans don't really care about new and fresh. If Sony was like Nintendo, Crash might still be important in the video gaming world, rather than a shell of his former self. And you are suggesting that risks would not be taken if Sony was like Nintendo? Risks like........I dunno, the wii? Forget risky games like Wii Fit, and Wii Music.........the Wii, and the DS, are very large risks and fresh ideas that were taken by Nintendo.

Mario/Link has got as big a change in their successful formulas as the aforementioned games that excite PS3 fans.....so I don't know where you are going with that.

I don't know what your last point has to do with any of my points. If anything, you should dislike the "old and tired" Gran Turismo, since it's more in the vein of Nintendo like thinking, rather than Sony. In fact, you should be excited more for Motorstorm 2, than you are for GT5, since Motorstorm is a "new, fresh and better" franchise.

@BTFeather55: So you do claim the Wii series is shovelware? OK...

No More Heroes would have done much better on 360 or PS3 than the Wii and that is a given.

Oh, it's a given, I forgot.

By the way, have you looked at Okami PS2/Wii sales lately? Is that another game which "as a given" would surely sell a million on the 360?

If Madworld and / or The Conduit don't sell well while WSR does you will see even more party game and shovelware type programs released for the system instead and I do believe that will impact the Wii's sales worldwide as it already has in Japan.

I look forward to see how this "Wii is doomed" argument pans out.

Some of you people even go so far as to say Wii Sports is the greatest system seller ever; when Wii Sports is actually a worse system seller than Combat on the Atari 2600 and in no way comparable to SMB.  Super Mario Brothers was responsible for all of the NES' early sales while Wii Sports only achieves the sales it is credited with since it is in the Wii box.

It is funny how Wii haters can twist Wii Sports to their benefit.  On the one hand when sales of the game are being discussed they always talk about how it is included in the box (choosing to ignore the fact it has outsold the PS3 in Japan where it is not bundled).  Yet on the other hand the same people talk about how Wii is a Wii Sports playing machine and people buy the Wii with Wii Sports and play nothing besides this.  So which is it?  If you really think there are not loads of new gamers that bought a Wii just because of Wii Sports then I don't know which planet you live on.

Nintendo doesn't need to create new franchises, because they're too busy creating new GENRES. Since Nintendo has already made the definitive platformers (Mario) and definitive adventure games (Zelda), in both 2-D and 3-D, dominated the RPG market with a single game (Pokemon), and dominated the racing genre by creating their own subgenre (Mario Kart) that outsells all other racers whether they're realistic racing simulations or other kart racers, they have decided to start dominating and defining genres that don't even exist yet. Enter Brain Age, Nintendogs, Wii Sports, and Wii Fit. Every game I've mentioned so far has spawned its own unending stream of cheap knock-offs, from the Giana Sisters and Commander Keen to Petz, Brain Boost, Deca Sports, and EA Fitness. I can not say this for Resistance, LBP, and Uncharted.

Funny post. You forgot to mention how they dominated the fighting genre! It's bigger than their definitive platformer now, after all.

@BTFeather55: Still going on about Wii Sports being bundled? I don't know how many times it's been brought up that it sold 3.5mil in Japan... (that's more than the PS3).

Also, once again you claim these niche, Japanese hits would have done better on PS3/360. Guess what games they share most in common with - other niche Japanese games. See: Okami (PS2), Valkyria Chronicles (PS3), Tales of Vesperia (360), Odin Sphere (PS2). The Wii just happens to attract these types of games more than the other two consoles.

Associated Content inst a news site, its one of those free "anyone can be a journalist" sites that promise to pay you 5 cents for every 10,000 views of your article. Generally full of biased opinions, so this article holds as much weight as any fanboy rant here at VG Chartz. Moving on.

Wich they got in loads, since Sony, Nintendo and MS fanboys rushed there to bash, agree and/or say it was wrong cus M$ cash is the best development team ever!

hmmm, you might be onto a viable side income there ;)

You bet! The only thing this System Wars has brough upon gamers, besides stupid, blind and deconstructive fanboyism, is a way to make easy money on the hate they feel for anything not prefered by them.

PS- I am calling dibs on the hole process, if someone didnt do that already that is..... (I think I lost a chance here...s***...)

LOL its all you, man. I dont have the time right now to cash in on that. ;)

Case in point for me: Zelda:TP was way too close to being a retreading of the Z:OOT path. Next iteration they either innovate or it won't cut for me.

This has to be a joke. All Zelda games have been different. TP was no different. The real way that TP follows OOT is that their are dungeons and a lot of the same weapons. But that's all Zelda's. But what other Zelda gig you transform into a wolf? They even introduced something new in the spinner and the double hook shot. And even if the next Zelda is similar to OOT. That's not a bad thing. It is one of the greatest games of all time. So I'd take it.

I think this community's infatuation with sales disrupts the core argument.

Did Shadow of the Colossus sell more than WiiFit? Did Braid? Flower?
No, they didn't.

Is WiiFit a better game? If you were to define a videogame as a simple interface used for the sole purpose of social interaction and fun, then maybe. But I think you would be selling this medium incredibly short.

To clarify, I'm not addressing the article in question, but the underlying argument in general.
Also, for recognition's sake, WereKitten touched upon a similar point earlier in the thread.

Nintendo fans don't bring up sales. It makes you look silly.

Since Sony isn't developing Sin & Punishment 2 it's impossible for them to have surpassed nintendo. & the point he make about a more power is dumb.
