Forums - Gaming - Why Sony is Surpassing Nintendo in Game Development?

Well, bias aside, the article has good points. How about leting your own personal bias out and try to see it?

Nintendo really rellies in its most acclaimed and famous IPs, and constantly release new iterations on the same basic principles. Its the truth. They evolved to some interesting point, but its there. Its Mario_________, Pokemon_________, and so on.

The so called new IPs (Wiifit,Wiidance, Wiising and others) are there to make money, by making you pay for hardware that will let you play said games. Heck WiiSports or whatever its called is in the dozens of millions of units sold....

So, because Nintendo is on the top, 'printing' money, they are absolutely free of loosing their development skills, by only going bundle, easy, funny, party games? They can do no wrong? Criticism on Nintendo means you're a fanboy for either MS or Sony?

Nintendo lost the lead to Sony in the midle of 90's because they thought like this. Sony lost the lead this gen because of the same reasons. See the trend?

So, as long as I get the money, the numbers, the bragging rights on the interwebs, I dont care I get more shovelware, play the basicaly re-rashed games that kept Nintendo afloat this past gen, its cool, right?

Flame away! The bias in the article was there, but because it was pro Sony, and against Nintendo, the NDF (yep...Nintendo Defense Force...pathetic I know..but it will work for now) is out to protect mighty Ninty, who could care less about this forum, its community, or its claims.

I am vaguely remembering why I stoped participating in forums when this gen beggan....too much blind fanboyism all around to try and have a fruitfull debate about how the companies could be better and so much "My ___________ (insert favorite console/company) is better and can do no wrong!" bs to diggest.

Ok, so then if none of that is original, then tell me what on the PS3 is, because all I see there is also "pre-existing genres and concepts".

Uhm, who said anything about the PS3? Or even that you need to be entirely original to make good games? I was debating against the "Nintendo invented most genres and revolutionized everything" current of thought.

When I think of something original, though? Shadow of the Colossus and Flower come to my mind. Or in a less radical way ICO or Braid or Indigo Prophecy. And for the future, I plan to tread new waters with Heavy Rain and The Path.

In Nintendo's field there are really quirky titles, like Killer7, but Nintendo plays it safe, especially as a first party developer.

"All you need in life is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure." - Mark Twain

Nintendo's best games have been pretty much on par with Sony's this gen which wasn't the case last gen when they were releasing games that didn't really improve over the games on the N64 in any significant ways other than Metroid Prime and in the previous gen when Nintendo had a handful of amazing games but was blown away by both the PS1 and even the Dreamcast in its short time on the market as far as the sheer amount of outstanding games on the market.

The Wii has two problems. It isn't powerful enough to make games that look as good as the best games on the 360 / PS3, so the games on the Wii to look as good as those on the other systems must have a high degree of art direction in them see Muramasa, Fracture, Kizuna, No More Heroes, and Madworld which all studios probably aren't qualified to deliver. And, it is stigmatized in fan circles because the best games on the system like Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, No More Heroes, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Okami, and Zack and Wiki haven't been the system's biggest selling titles while cheap simulators that appeal to the mass of people (just as fluff music appeals to the mass of people while more meaningful alternative or punk music doesn't) like Wii Sports, Play, and Fit have been the highest sellers on the Wii.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl is an exception to the best games on the Wii haven't been the system's best sellers thanks to the popularity of all of Nintendo's colorful characters while Mario Kart Wii has walked the line as being the best selling core game on the Wii yet carrying many of the same qualities as the simulators and not having really seen much improvement over past games in the series, thus creating a more average appearing critical appreciation of itself.

New Franchises

Nintendo has been relying on their old franchises for years. You hardly see any new hardcore franchises from them as they would rather reinvent Mario, Metroid, Kirby and Zelda. Sony, on the other hand, is constantly coming up with new franchises for their Playstation platforms with the latest being Resistance, LittleBigPlanet and Uncharted. Although Sony franchises don't have the same critical acclaim as Nintendo's, the gap is quickly closing. Wii Sports/Play/Fit/Music/Sports Resort, Brain/Sight/Language Training, Nintendogs, Big Brain Academy, Endless Ocean, Excite Truck/bots, and many others do not count because they aren't games

Partnership with Smaller Studios

Sony is better than Nintendo when working with smaller development studios. Their partnership with Media Molecule (LittleBigPlanet), helped create one of the best franchises in recent years for Media Molecule. Oddly enough, Nintendo also had a shot with Media Molecule before Sony snatched them up. Other partnerships with small companies like Q-Games (PixelJunk series), Queasy Games (Everyday Shooter) and Thatgamecompany (Flower) gave the Playstation Network downloadable service a distinct advantage against WiiWare. Nintendo's vast lineup of downloadable games, including World of Goo, Defend Your Castle, and the best games in history from the VC do not count because they are for teh cazualz

Online

Sony also has a leg up on Nintendo with online gameplay. In spite of both services being free, the online for Sony is light years ahead of Nintendo. This has more to do with Nintendo and their strictness towards exposing online to children than Sony. With online multiplayer being more prominent than ever before, Sony is easily beating Nintendo in that department. Mario Kart can be ignored, as can the many other good online games the Wii has because they are made by an evil corporation. Monster Hunter 3 counts for -1 games, because of the power of the cell

Visuals

Nintendo took a chance with the Wii by not equipping it with high-definition technology. Although Nintendo's stance resulted in record-breaking sales, their game development has slowed visually as a result. So while Nintendo is stuck developing Nintendo Wii games that look the same as Nintendo Gamecube titles, Sony managed to get the upper hand thanks to the power of the Playstation 3 and their shared technology between the internal studios. People clearly care about visuals more than innovation and control, as evidenced by the PS3's incredible hardware and software sales.

Global Presence

Finally, Sony's development studios span the globe with facilities in Europe, Japan and North America. Aside from Retro Studios in North America, Nintendo mainly relies on their Japanese development studios. With a bigger and more diverse group of developers, Sony can develop a larger range of quality titles. This may be Sony's biggest advantage in catching up to Nintendo as the best video game developer. The physical location at which the code was written, or the art drawn is very important, because the waggle is shit

Was randomly linked to the article and two things really stand out for me after I read it.

1. New Franchise: Only new hardcore franchises are counted. That's why Wii Sports, Wii Fit or even Wii Music don't qualify as new franchise.

2. I'm not sure why a console's visual capability and online strategy have anything to do with a studio's ability in game developement.

Cheers!

THIS ARTICLE FAILS!

@BTFeather55: Even if nothing else, Mario Kart Wii has a fantastic online multiplayer mode, which by itself is more than enough improvement.  (not that there aren't other things such as bikes)

As for your second paragraph I didn't really get the point. Are you saying games like SMG, MP3 and Zelda didn't sell enough?

Sony already has surpassed Nintendo in game development. LBP is better every Mario game ever made put together times fifteen. I also might be lying.

They should have sold more than Wii Play, Wii Fit, Wii Sports, and Mario Kart Wii in my opinion.

Then you might be interested to know that they did.

Not that you didn't know it, of course.

EDIT - Oh, I misread your post.  Are you really surprised that those games sold less? Ever noticed how games like Guitar Hero sell a lot?

Most Guitar Hero games have been better games than Wii series games.
