Forums - Gaming - Why Sony is Surpassing Nintendo in Game Development?

With regards to new franchises, I believe that Sony is forced to create new franchises to survive, whereas Nintendo can take their time to create new ones, since they can reuse old ones. How can Nintendo reuse old ones, while Sony can't? Because Sony releases sequels far too soon.

Take, for example, the main platformer for both consoles: Mario and Ratchet. How often do you see a new Ratchet platformer? Pretty much every year. Mario usually only comes out once every generation.

With Ratchet coming out every year, the fans of Ratchet will begin to anticipate it less, and less and become less excited for each new release. At some point, Sony will deem it an unprofitable IP, and retire it, or sell it off (a la Crash). Nintendo doesn't have that problem, as the sequels for most of their series are a few years apart, which ensures that fans of the series are still excited for each and every new entry into the series, whether it be Mario, Zelda or Metroid.

I also don't understand why only "hardcore" franchises only count when looking at new franchises. I also don't see what the other 4 points have to do with game development directly.

it's better that way, we get better and fresher ideas each time and new characters, if sony were like nintendo crash would  be still around a marvelous game like LBP would have never happen, it was too risky.

as for nintendo

mario is getting stars, link still saving hyrule, and mario got a online mode now. but not really much have change in them.

gran turismo is bigger than Halo i am pretty sure you know that.

Fresh ideas? The general concensus here is the best two PS3 exclusives are sequels to franchises that have existed for 5 and 20 years. The two biggest games coming out this year are sequels in their third and fifth iterations.

On the other hand four of Nintendo's highest selling games ever came out this gen on the DS and Wii, and are all fresh and original IPs. They being Brain Age, Nintendogs, Wii Sports and Wii Fit.

Also if you want to speak about getting stale, there are almost as many Ratchet and Clank platformers as there are Mario platformers, and R&C has only existed for less than a decade. They come at a rate of one every single year. That's the same rate as Madden NFL football.

Sales?

Development cost?

Oh wait, that would paint Sony in a bad light.

I think this is focusing on the art of development as opposed to the more commericial aspect . You of all people should realise that sales and cost's aren't everything unless you are a shareholder and not a gamer.

Most GAMERS would love it if their first party IPs SOLD well and thus they could receive multiple iterations of the IP, sped up by reduced DEVELOPMENT COSTS. See what I did there?

On the other hand a GAMER could care less if a stale franchise SELLS or reduces DEVELOPMENT COSTS by reusing old assets.

Case in point for me: Zelda:TP was way too close to being a tetreading of the Z:OOT path. Next iteration they either innovate or it won't cut for me. Why should I hope if it sells tons? Only in the hope that it will turn for the better further down the road? Why should they innovate if we don't vote with our wallets?

Company and shareholders point of view: money is the goal, good games are the means

Gamer point of view: good games are the goal, money is the means

I know where I stand.

The problem with your argument is that Zelda is hardly "stale." People moaning because Link acquires the Master Sword and goes to fight Ganon don't actually know what "stale" means. TP is completely different game from any of its predecessors and is a masterpiece. So you just completely invalidated your own argument. Next time, don't use a game that's really really awesome.

I agree with you Werekitten.

also Claudelv250 zelda TP isnt as great as you think, i enjoyed the game but i know it didnt deserve game of the year of i think 07 or was it 06.

the article imo is a little bias but i do have to agree with it in some aspects, the "revolution" with the Wii is the motion controls but imo that seems to be dieing fast as hardly any "good" or "interesting" games come out for it (also wii fanboys i said hardly not never). Nintendo are money whores (i like to call it mainstream) so of course the gamer is not on there mind, but to be far that is why they are in the business. To gain money, a profit.

imo with ps3 sony took a chance and you know what, it seems to be coming out with great games. i dont care if sony makes money, i only care that they are in business to create great games. So wii fanboys talking about how the wii is selling sooooo well, STFU. if the console has no games, then i could care less if its number one.

well i lost myself half way thru this nonsense...

there is tons of new ips coming to the white box.......you just need to research...oh wait that might mean Sony wont win....

and as far as dev with small studios...WII WARE----enough said!

i am going to count my toes instead of continuing this b/c that is more interesting right now..one...two...three....eleven....

Luckily for most people, the Wii has a wealth of games.... if I weren't poor I would have a good 25-30 strong catalogue already.

I also don't think Zelda:TP deserved GOTY... but you can't argue it being any more identical to past Zelda unles you also argue MGS4 is the same as past MGS or how GoW3 is going to be similar to past GoWs.... etc etc.

I can give you that the idea of turning into a game stuff like self-improving videos and books was very succesfull and very well executed in Brain Age and Wii Fit. It was more bold than original, though. Educational minigames about maths and logic are ancient history on the PC, the DS just offered the right interface to implement them on a handheld.

As for Nintendogs? Little Computer People and Tamagotchi say hello.

Wii Sports? Obvious and fun showcase for the Wii controller, the content in itself is so rarefacted that it is hard to even call it an IP.

I like playing Wii Sports with friends as much as the next guy, but this idolizing Nintendo is sickening. They are good at tweaking, polishing and popularizing, they rely on pre-existing genres and concepts as much as most other devs, and more than the most original ones.

SCE has way too many employees, more than Nintendo in fact. Probably a legacy of the PS2 years. I don't think that number of employees can be justified now, so we'll probably see merged/closed/smaller studios and perhaps less focus on new IPs, and more focus on the sure hits (i.e. Sony's biggest franchises).

I really doubt they'll stop developing new IPs, considering the success of franchises like Resistance, Uncharted, Motorstorm and other new IPs like LittleBigPlanet.

After all, they need to keep coming up with new ideas to discover new megatons - new franchises that can rise to the greatness of GOW, etc.

I didn't say they'd stop entirely, just that something has to give. They will most likely reduce the number of employees, the question is what the impact will be (i.e. how many and which studios get closed/merged/downsized).

Ok, so then if none of that is original, then tell me what on the PS3 is, because all I see there is also "pre-existing genres and concepts".

I've been saying that forever! All nintendo does is make sequels to their classic franchises, they don't make new IP's!

Sony makes tons of new ones each gen. PS1 you got all the classics like Gran Turismo, Driver, Parappa the Rapper, and way more. PS2 you got Ratchet/Clank, Jak & Daxter, God of War, ICO, and tons more. And PS3 theres LBP, Uncharted, Resistance, and more.

In other words, this unsigned article is most probably the work of a Sony fan who looks at the world through Playstation-colored glasses.
