Forums - Gaming - Why Sony is Surpassing Nintendo in Game Development?

Nintendo doesn't need to create new franchises, because they're too busy creating new GENRES. Since Nintendo has already made the definitive platformers (Mario) and definitive adventure games (Zelda), in both 2-D and 3-D, dominated the RPG market with a single game (Pokemon), and dominated the racing genre by creating their own subgenre (Mario Kart) that outsells all other racers whether they're realistic racing simulations or other kart racers, they have decided to start dominating and defining genres that don't even exist yet. Enter Brain Age, Nintendogs, Wii Sports, and Wii Fit. Every game I've mentioned so far has spawned its own unending stream of cheap knock-offs, from the Giana Sisters and Commander Keen to Petz, Brain Boost, Deca Sports, and EA Fitness. I can not say this for Resistance, LBP, and Uncharted.

Weak argument is weak

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Sales?

Development cost?

Oh wait, that would paint Sony in a bad light.

I think this is focusing on the art of development as opposed to the more commericial aspect . You of all people should realise that sales and cost's aren't everything unless you are a shareholder and not a gamer.

Most GAMERS would love it if their first party IPs SOLD well and thus they could receive multiple iterations of the IP, sped up by reduced DEVELOPMENT COSTS. See what I did there?

On the other hand a GAMER could care less if a stale franchise SELLS or reduces DEVELOPMENT COSTS by reusing old assets.

Case in point for me: Zelda:TP was way too close to being a retreading of the Z:OOT path. Next iteration they either innovate or it won't cut for me. Why should I hope if it sells tons? Only in the hope that it will turn for the better further down the road? Why should they innovate if we don't vote with our wallets?

Company and shareholders point of view: money is the goal, good games are the means

Gamer point of view: good games are the goal, money is the means

I know where I stand.

For past generations Nintendo was like the top developer.

But for this generation, its gotta be Sony.

The problem with your argument is that Zelda is hardly "stale." People moaning because Link acquires the Master Sword and goes to fight Ganon don't actually know what "stale" means. TP is completely different game from any of its predecessors and is a masterpiece. So you just completely invalidated your own argument. Next time, don't use a game that's really really awesome.

If people don't like Wii Sports and Wii Fit, that's fine. But I think it's clear that it takes an amazing developer to create something earth-shattering like that. Anyone who thinks otherwise should not post articles about gaming.

Besides that, the highest reviewed 1st party title of this gen is Mario Galaxy.

First of all, I bolded in my post a few words that make all the difference. We were talking about an individual gamer dealing with the quality vs the commercial success of franchises.

For _this_ individual gamer Zelda:TP felt stale. It was a good game, very good, but not a masterpiece. Too similar to OOT, not enough identity like, say, Okami that - again for this individual gamer - was a far better game, whatever glaring downsides it had.

Plus, do you really think that my argument was invalidated because I used an example you did not agree with? Logical fallacy there.

People, the fact that this is not an OP on some message board but a "legit" article does not mean it is not trolling. This guy is more then likely hunting for page hits.

Kinda hard for Nintendo to come up with new franchises when they have 100+ of them while sony have what? 10?

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I would take the franchises MS had a hand a creating this gen (BIoshock, Gears, Mass Effect, Dead Rising and of course the forgettable Too Human) over the franchises that Sony had a hand in (Resistance and Uncharted are the only good ones I can think of at the top of my head, then we've got the average which is Heavenly Sword, Folklore and Motorstorm down to the awful Lair)
