Forums - Sales Discussion - 4.5 million PSPs sold in Asia (outside of Japan) - official Sony numbers!

Do they have Asia numbers for the PS3 or PS2?

Around the Network

Yes, they do, but the session with Sony was PSP only.

@NJ5

Asia is the piracy king region

So take a guess lol

Yeah that's why I asked lol.

@Star Scream: No wonder Nintendo isn't exactly rushing to launch the Wii there.

You now they already have the Vii , i think the wii would bomb there it cant compete with the Vii since the vii already has  wii sport and wii play clones.

Well, they've already launched Wii in Korea. As long as the hardware is profitable then I don't think the manufacturers are overly concerned about piracy in emerging markets. Lucky for SCE Asia that the loss-leading PS3 hasn't been hacked yet.

Is piracy that widespread in Korea?

Same as nearly everywhere else in Asia.

Interesting, but expected.

Do we know if software shipments also include movies on UMD?

You should be able to work that out from this:

Number of UMD titles/ breakdown by territories (as of Dec 2008)

  • WW: over 2000 titles
  • SCEJ: over 700
  • SCEA: over 400
  • SCEE: over 500
  • SCEAsia: over 500

These are still shipped numbers. non-Japan Asia/Eastern Europe figures could use some tweaking but overall we had already known PSP shipments were 49.6m through Dec and 50m through January.

NPD had PSP sell through at 14.5m through January 2009 in the USA for instance. Sony says 18m shipped in SCEA terrritories. That includes Canada which insures the figure is at least 15.5m and probably closer to 16m through January. Even if Mexico is included I dont think PSP has launched in Latin America, so its difficult to imagine PSP over 16.2m in the Americas which is what we have for it through January.

The same kind of thing is true in the other regions, where 'unit sales' as with Nintendo, Microsoft etc mean what the manufacturer is selling to stores.

PSP launched in Latin America quite a while before PS3 did.

How did you work that out?

well i can tell you from spending a year in korea that it's quite popular there, but DS is much more popular. I bet PSP is close to a million in korea alone, DS is well over 2 million now. The problem with these asian countries is nobody buys the games, everyone is pirating.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X
