If you are talking about 3/31/09, it will be approaching 60 instead of 50 million sold. If you mean by 1/1/2009 I don't think so.

I did say fiscal year so its 3/31/2009 but I doubt that they will sell 60 million in its fiscal year, since even Ninty themselves holds the production of the Wiis this year when they met their quota but 60 million was possible if Nintendo wants to.

in the sales data for the week ending 27th Dec, i would say Wii sales may be somewhere between 1.5 - 2 million (due to final christmas rush and boxing day sales)

that would leave about 4.2 - 4.5 million to be sold in the last 14 weeks of the financial year.

meaning 300 - 322 thousand is the weekly average needed to reach 50 million.

now the weekly average this year (outside of the holiday period) has been around the 300-350 thousand mark.

so it would seem likely that it will make 50 million.

however with sales being so high in the holiday period, it's possible that popularity and demand for the Wii may increase. sales could hit an average of 400k.

Nintendo's target is 52 million. and they'll ship that many. i would say actual sales could be around 50.9 to 51.4 million.

If we say 1.5M for next week, and 750K for the week after that, it leaves the Wii at pretty much exactly 46M.

Then it needs 4M in 12 weeks. That's 333K/week.

From the launch in Japan, hell yeah! The Ps2 was at just 24M (WW) after 2 years since initial launch (Wii at ~ 40M)

2 years in Japan? Not quite, the Ps2 was at 8.24M, Wii at just 7.02M. Ps2 wins!

2 years in Others? The Ps2 was at 11.09M... The Wii at... 15.6M! Wii wins!

2 years in Americas? The Ps2 at 12.95M... The Wii at 16.8M! Wii wins!

Doing this slightly favours the Ps2 though, as it had longer time to supply up. The 1st comparison (since initial launch) is just meaningless - ignore it.

There is no way the Wii can sale over at least 6.20 Mil to get to 50 Million. That will not happy in 08, but it will in January of 09

I still remember when I predicted (months ago) that the Wii was going to sell between 50-60 millions by the end of the fiscal year.... seems like I was right despite all the Wii haters calling me crazy =)

Overall the Wii is clearly beating the ps2 so far. Only in Japan is losing when you align launches, but it has a good avantage everywhere else
