@DMJ

Not really a valid point. There were plenty of RPGs on the GC over the PS2 and they might have put those JRPGs on the 360 to appeal to the West too. It hasn't worked well though, and the bulk of JRPG announcements are going to the Wii (which the Wii can sell) :P

@outlaw

I doubt it. The game only looks good because of the art style. Technically it isn't impressive. I'm positive the Wii can do VCs graphics.

Well, the (very, very) occasional framerate drops tells me other wise. It has only dropped twice in my campaign (37 hours) but for that to happen on the PS3........

@ Benga

Well, it is. Shaky hands would kill your aim in this game, being that you don't get to re-aim after you shoot.

The only framerate drop was due to the grass... fix the grass and your fine.

Framerate drops happen a lot on the PS3, usually due to sloppy programming.

Aside from which... why couldn't aiming be handled the same way it is in the actual game.

just tie it to the analog stick if you needed.

Then, what would the benefit of the Wii version?

Lower development costs to keep a good nich ip from collapsing. Plus, the whole idea it is hard to aim using the wiimote is simply perposterous. Its easy to aim with the thing, MP3 and MOH showed us this.

I don't thin it's just the style, it's the format. Video games have a long way to go in delivering emotionally powerful dramatic experiences. I suspect I'm not in the minority on this.

I don't think it's the format at all.

After playing 2/3rd of VC, I'm positive that's because of the translation, at least. Perhaps the english VA makes it worse. But the translation is definitely a big problem.

In VC, I play with the original japanese VA, and everything connects very well. I put the english subtitles on, and the problem is that often, while the japanese VA and what they say is perfectly fine and conveys emotions perfectly, the translation doesn't actually translate what they say, but a cringe worthy nonsense.

Sometimes, they even add dialogues that makes a perfectly fine scene completely retarded. For example, they will say things that definitely show some feeling (love, concern, ...) while the original VA let you feel the situation and never tell you explicitely what's going on (and often, the english translation is just plain wrong).

The english translation, at least the one in the subtitles, is just embarassing a lot of times, while I've yet to feel any embarassment with the original japanese voices.

And it's often the translation + english VA that is the problem. Tales games have the same problem.

Well, the dev costs for the PS3 version are small already, and porting it over would also require a retooled or all-new engine. And aiming in this game is nothing like any FPS you've ever played. It would be more of a hassle, and much easier to use with the d-pad and analog stick.

Better sales.  A port being cheaper even after developing a new engine.

Likely added content.

Also, I heard the development costs for the game were actually pretty high since they developed an all new state of the art HD engine for it.

Really it would of been better had the game just came out on Wii to begin with.  It likely would of been a better game in general or they would of had money to advertise since they wouldn't of needed to spend on the HD Graphics.

I mean.... I don't know if you've noticed but Graphics aren't usually high on the list of a SRPG fans list.

I mean we're used to having Ogre Battle SNES style pudgey character graphics... for games out even in this generation!  (Disgaea 3.)

Unless a game is heavily physics based or has a strong online component  most games would probably benefit from being on the wii.

Even games like Killzone 2 which are supposed to be awesome... lack options like splitscreen and co-op... and online splitscreen.

What's up with that?   Spending less on graphics to put in features people care about... and will give them value past 5 minutes of "wow this looks cool!" would of been great.

Is there a JRPG that doesn't have the problem?

I don't know how much the port would cost, but I am saying it would have benifited from coming out on the wii in the first place. And you think if they were making it for the wii instead of ps3 they could not have come up with a good solution for aiming? That really is not an issue that could not be easyily solved. And to say that the costs were low, do you have figures? Most ps3 games cost alot to make, especially making an engine. The higer userbase of the wii, which has already had a succsessful (in the US even) srpg (and no, fire emblem is not a big ip in the US) would have been a great fit.
