Forums - Sales - Why did the Gamecube do so poorly? (with respect to sales)

There was no DVD, it released a year after the PS2 with its far superior library, and Nintendo brand name was pretty much destroyed in the 5th gen.

The Xbox sold better because of Halo. Without Halo, the Xbox would have failed big time. The technology was also superior.

It suffered from a 'kiddie' image which alienated a good chunk of the then all important 18-35 male demographic. It also had poor third party support when compared to the PS2 & Xbox. Also it had no Mario game at launch and when it did arrive it was lackluster apparently ( I still say SMS is better than SM64). This didn't help when trying to attract gamers to the machine. It also lacked the casual stuff that made PS2 sos successful (Buzz, SingStar, EyeToy).

Lack of third-party support. Still, they made a healthy profit from the little cube anyway.

Lets see:

  • Kiddie console with tons of Nintendo games (lack of 3rd party support)
  • Worst console design in the past ~10+ years
  • Bad brand image (N64 had ruined what they had during the NES/SNES years)
  • Lack of core audience (audience was either kids, or hardcore Nintendo users) - Sony had already begun to gather the core audiences, and Microsoft was comitted to get the hardcore/PC users

The problem with their marketing was that they were indeed targeting younger kids - and had no games that anyone that was a teen, or SWM would give a care about, outside of an N-fanatic.

Are you talking about wii or gamecube? :O I really don't see any difference between last nintendo consoles. Other than the amount of shovelware that is.

Wow, you're so wrong. Most shovelware was on PS2, by far. That's simply what happens with winning consoles.

Gamecube was a niche console, but still has some amazing exclusives like WindWaker, REmake and Zero, Eternal Darkness, Fire Emblem and multiplats like Beyond Good & Evil, Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia.

The PS2 was simply the only console someone needed last gen. It ruled the casual and hardcore segment. Futhermore Nintendo's own games were not the best quality ever. It launched with Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine wasn't great, weak Mario Kart. I think every single Nintendo Wii game is better or at least equal to its Gamecube counterpart (except that I love WindWaker).

It wasn't marketed right. It had decent enough games and was very compact and well designed

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

GC was too hardcore. You hoons just don't appreciate the awesomeness of purple (Prince knew what was up).

The handle was best used as a wiring loom to stop your cables getting yanked out; even if the cables got snagged and brought the thing clattering to the floor, it would still work.

Shit, that thing was so useful as a weapon against little brothers.

WHERE IS MY KORORINPA 3

Lack of 3rd party support, way to softcore image, lack of online support, lack of a DVD player etc...

"that thing was so useful as a weapon against little brothers."

Yeah, that one viral video where the guys break their little brother's gc remains one of my favorites.

Heavens to Murgatoids.

It sold poorly because no one wants a purple lunch box sitting under their TV. That was one of many mistakes Nintendo made last gen. Made it so so easy for Sony to put it in people's heads that Gamecube is for kids. Well of course it's for kids. It's a lunch box. Have no idea what Nintendo were thinking.

Another problem was launching like a year after the successor (PS2) to the most successful console ever (PS1). By the time Gamecube came out all third parties were focused on PS2. The result was Gamecube was simply a Nintendo game player plus Resident Evil and Viewtiful Joe.
