Forums - Sales - retailers suck at being retailers

think about this for a second. What is the main selling point of a retail store? customer service. What do most retailers fail at? customer service.

Why am I saying this and why am I posting this in sales and not off topic? simple this effects game sales negativelyI am not going to touch the gamestop subject as that relates to fanboy issues and that is a different subject.

In America the largest game retailer is WalMart, this should be common knowledge by now. Customer service is something WalMart should push, and make sure their employees at least try to sell their merchandise and is someone knowledgeable on a subject.Sadly I have noticed most employees are freaking morons when it comes to electronics in the electronics section.

As salemen, you should probably try to idk sale something. Not sit behind the counter or just stocking all day when there are possible customers in your department that with a bit of discussion you can probably get them to buy things they didnt even come in to get.

This doesnt just apply to games though, I am meaning the electronics themselves. If someone is browsing the TVs you would think someone should walk over and talk about the TVs?

idk this is mainly just a rant about how freaking stupid retailers seem to have become but WalMart is my main target as I work for the pos company.

I agree

in GAME in UK I saw a an employee trying to convince this girl to buy a PS3 when she wanted DS games...I was like WTF!

does she looks like she wants PS3.....she's asking you for DS game recomendations.....give her a straight answer!!

While I'm not one to defend poor customer service, we consumers really have brought this upon ourselves. Having employees that care enough to give good service requires paying them good wages, rather than fifty cents above the legal minimum. Of course, doing that hurts your bottom line, so you have to raise your prices to compensate. And customers have shown time and again that lower prices>customer service, so they shop elsewhere instead.

In the end, most retailers are just reflecting the will of the customer by favoring lower prices over actual service. It annoys me greatly, but I can't really say I miss customer service either, as my generation has never seen it.

Customer service will go a long way for smaller companies, Wal-mart already has a strong (the strongest) foothold of all the retailers. There is no need (or want, check all those lawsuits) to pay for good customer service in Wal-mart's eyes.

A gamestop, EB games, etc...(a small store) should have the best customer service but I think they don't even have good customer service, always some punk kid who doesn't want to be bothered.

I am the only one who doesn't like to be harrassed while shopping? I don't consider some dude trying to sell me something I didn't come to get as "consumer service" I consider it a pain in the ass. If I want information ill ask it, no "Can I help you?" bullshit.

If a person is not working off of commision, I don't really consider them a salesman. How good would you expect your service in a restaurant if your waiter worked off a shitty salary rather than the opportunity for a nice tip from you? I don't blame them for being apathetic towards their jobs. I would be too in their position.

I agree that many stores could use improvement in customer service and Wal-Mart is no exception to the rule. However, considering they're the biggest retailer in the world and make billions of dollars in profit the way they operate, they have no real incentive to change. In any economy, good low prices are almost always the biggest factor in most consumer's eyes when it comes to choosing where they shop. In a bad economy like we're facing now, it's become even more important. There was a recent news story about many big stores bringing in less money from the same time period last year. Wal-Mart though increased sales, one of the few big retailers to do so.

I'll come up with something better eventually...

if you want service, you're better off to places like Future Shop (or even best buy at worst). They come and say hi and ask for help. If you don't need help and know stuffs, then you go to walmart

I'm sorry... is Walmart really the best example of "customer service"?

It's like talking about global warming but using the example of a particularly cold day.

We all know what Walmart is for, cheap product. If you want good customer service, go shop at place where employees actually know their stuff.

well, you can't really expect a deep discounter like walmart to offer customer service. after all training costs money and if i shop at walmart i'd like them to squeeze every cent of savings i can possibly get.

i've had pretty good experiences at best buy, which i visit quite a bit. often times i'll be just browsing and a service rep would come up and ask me if they can help, like the time when i bought NHL 09 for the PC. it was still in storage (release day) so the guy had to dig it up and get it to me. it did take him like 10 minutes to get it, but that wasn't his fault.

i don't know, maybe there's a minimal amount of service that a shopper expects, even at walmart.

the Wii is an epidemic.
