While I'm not one to defend poor customer service, we consumers really have brought this upon ourselves. Having employees that care enough to give good service requires paying them good wages, rather than fifty cents above the legal minimum. Of course, doing that hurts your bottom line, so you have to raise your prices to compensate. And customers have shown time and again that lower prices>customer service, so they shop elsewhere instead.
In the end, most retailers are just reflecting the will of the customer by favoring lower prices over actual service. It annoys me greatly, but I can't really say I miss customer service either, as my generation has never seen it.
