Forums - Nintendo - I'm glad Nintendo did more of a traditional generational transition with S1 to S2

Tagged games:

It's understandable. I think developers at Nintendo were getting exhausted using Switch's weak hardware. Metroid Prime 4 is cross-gen out of obligation, and Pokémon Legends Z-A seems to be the game to transition Pokémon players out of Switch and on to Switch 2. Even if a Black and White remake years from now could run on Switch, there's almost no way it will be cross-gen. It won't come out until at least 2028 and that's about 3 years or more after Switch 2 launched.
DK and Mario Kart were developed as Switch games first, but the vision for the games evolved. They didn't need to be weighed down by Switch.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 159 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million, then 161 million)

PS5: 116 million (was 105 million, then 115 million, then 122 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

I get it. It was the safe rout to go. But I was so bummed out. I mean, I knew we weren't getting a dedicated home console again but man... just a Switch with better specs and a bigger screen? It was so deflating. I was bored with the Switch years ago. I wanted something new, and I didn't get it.

But with the state of the industry now, I guess it didn't matter. I would have checked out anyway.

"But with the state of the industry now", yeah, with the state of the industry now, a misstep, or a not well received product would send Nintendo to nonexistence

Yeah..... i highly doubt that

Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

It is definitely more exciting that way. Nintendo kinda has to do it like that since their first party games push their console sales far harder than the other two.

Meh. They survived the Wii-U. They could survive anything. They are so frugal, so conservative, that it would take something more than a poor-selling console to end them. But I get your point.

Yeah I love the Switch 1, but by the end its life it was falling so far behind in power that I think a lot of devs were finding it hard to work with. For Nintendo's devs it must have been nice to finally have some more breathing room.

Fair enough, but i feel like the Switch worked SO well and really struggled to run games halfway through it's gen. Technology isn't at a place right now that i feel they can truly do something groundbreaking again. And let's be honest, there is no way they will do 2 seperate systems anymore, it's just too complicated and dev times has gone through the roof.

So then what should they do, a portable only system ? I feel like that would be a massive let down from the Switch. Then should they do a home console again ? I honestly doubt they cannot really compete with PS and Xbox with that model anymore, especially since they are still working on getting some third parties back. And most importantly, they would lose their biggest market which has been the handheld one since like... the gameboy.

I think Switch 2 is enough a leap to make it stand apart, but it is interesting to see where they will go next. But then, where are we going to be in technology wise in 8 years...

When you put it that way I'm glad too.

Yeah while I did enjoy the fresh and innovative approach of systems like the Wii and Switch 1, there's just not as much ground left unbroken now as there was in 2006 or 2017.

The Switch was a wildly successful system and deviating too far from that blueprint could have lost a big share of the market. Innovating in smaller ways like Mouse Mode and Gameshare while keeping the core concept intact was a much better bet than chasing some crazy new gimmick and risking alienating your audience a la Wii U.

The system itself wasn't really what I was referring to in the OP though, more the traditional approach of having next gen exclusives from day 1, as opposed to the heavily crossgen strategy of PS5 and Xbox Series.

Well, it's clear from sales that the Switch was what today's gamers wanted. But for me, watching the company of my entire youth abandon the home console market like that, similar to Sega before them... it was a little depressing. And then to see them pretty much just copy and paste the exact same thing after waiting as long as we did? As I said, I was bored with the first Switch after a few years, which has always been the case for me. I grew up with five-year cycles, and new consoles that changed everything. Now it's like, the same system for fourteen years?!?!?! I was not cool with that. Not in the least.

What do you mean you were bored with the system? It has literally over 13000 games on it. So you have only played on Nintendo consoles since the Wii then? Since Playstation, Xbox and PC have been the same for 25-40 years...
