Fair enough, but i feel like the Switch worked SO well and really struggled to run games halfway through it's gen. Technology isn't at a place right now that i feel they can truly do something groundbreaking again. And let's be honest, there is no way they will do 2 seperate systems anymore, it's just too complicated and dev times has gone through the roof. So then what should they do, a portable only system ? I feel like that would be a massive let down from the Switch. Then should they do a home console again ? I honestly doubt they cannot really compete with PS and Xbox with that model anymore, especially since they are still working on getting some third parties back. And most importantly, they would lose their biggest market which has been the handheld one since like... the gameboy. I think Switch 2 is enough a leap to make it stand apart, but it is interesting to see where they will go next. But then, where are we going to be in technology wise in 8 years... |
Yeah while I did enjoy the fresh and innovative approach of systems like the Wii and Switch 1, there's just not as much ground left unbroken now as there was in 2006 or 2017.
The Switch was a wildly successful system and deviating too far from that blueprint could have lost a big share of the market. Innovating in smaller ways like Mouse Mode and Gameshare while keeping the core concept intact was a much better bet than chasing some crazy new gimmick and risking alienating your audience a la Wii U.
The system itself wasn't really what I was referring to in the OP though, more the traditional approach of having next gen exclusives from day 1, as opposed to the heavily crossgen strategy of PS5 and Xbox Series.
