Forums - Gaming - EA closes Bioware, 400 laid off across EA

They were my favorite dev for quite some time but also a dev I didn't care about anymore for the same amount of years already. Still bad for the employees obviously.

Sad, but Bioware hasnt been very good in like 15 years. Never had any faith in a new Mass Effect from them.

well their last three games either underperformed (ME:A and DA:V) or outright bombed (Anthem). Not counting the ME remaster collection. No idea if that did well but it definitely didn't need Bioware to release it.

ME: Legendary Edition actually sold very well. Arguably, it was the only reason Bioware even lasted as long as they did.

Yeah, Mass Effect Legendary Edition sold quite well, EA's CEO Andrew Wilson said in an investor earnings call 3 months after release that it was selling well above expectations. Not the case for their last 3 new games, Mass Effect Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age Veilguard were each said to have sold under expectations in their investor earnings calls. Veilguard barely sold more than half of what EA was expecting to sell in the launch quarter, while exact amounts below expectations weren't given for Anthem and Andromeda.

Oh dear, I never saw this coming.

Hopefully they find work under someone who actually appreciates them.

I think the bigger problem was that all three of them were in development for so long and their budgets grow so far out of control that none of them had any prayer of turning a profit. EA clearly had cause to suspect that whatever new Mass Effect project was in development was heading the same way.

EA is still the shittiest publisher in gaming. Millions have fond memories of Mass Effect, but nobody will have fond memories of any modern Madden or FIFA games because they're all the same recycled shit. Even Call of Duty isn't as recycled as Madden or FIFA. Those two franchises are only successful because there aren't any real alternatives to either of them.

It's been readily apparent for years that BioWare was living on borrowed time. Especially once we discovered Saudi Arabia was buying EA. No doubt it didn't help that outside of the Mass Effect trilogy remaster in 2021, the studio hasn't put out anything of note since.....2014?

Man, OG Xbox and 360 days BioWare was such a golden era though! KOTOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon Age Origins, and I even got into The Old Republic, they had the secret sauce in those days. While the BioWare I grew up loving has been long gone for more than a decade, the lasting legacy they had will never be forgotten.

There are, for better or worse, two types of successful developers - those who take longer between games but successfully reinvent the franchise with every entry, and those who play it safe and regularly iterate on a proven formula. For the past decade, Bioware haven't succeeded at being either of those.
