Forums - Gaming - EA closes Bioware, 400 laid off across EA

A person claiming to be a fired Bioware employee posted on Reddit an in-engine (UE5) trailer Bioware had made for the game a few months back, likely for a reveal at The Game Awards in December. The Mass Effect Reddit mods couldn't authenticate the video, but found no generative AI markers, and some independent sources have stated it is a legitimate trailer for the game.

Looks pretty good, reminds me of trailers for the original trilogy in terms of tone, and I'm not seeing character designs that feel like they were part of social justice messaging like Dragon Age Veilguard, I feel like they had learned some lessons from Veilguard flopping.

My last post just reminded me of the hookwink we got with Veilguard.

They showed early trailers for that, which looked drastically differnt from its release date look.
Which also looked more "proper" Dragon age like.  Back then, reception was very positive for the game.

That changed when we got close to release, and the game looked nothing like what was promised or showed off early on.

Basically a early teaser trailer is worth nothing, if you already proved you can fool people so completely before hand.

I cant help but note that you chose "in terms of tone" wording.
That was a core negative for veilguard, where alot of fans felt it missed the mark, and went disneyfied instead of how it was supposed to be.
And how it was shown early on.  <-----  (the hookwink I refer too)

It was one of the best studio of video games until they made Mass Effect Andromeda

Jason Schreier just reported "Can confirm that this is a real trailer of the Mass Effect game that BioWare was developing up until its closure yesterday"

From the surface level, it seems like they were at least on the right track. Damn, this is gonna be one of the biggest "what if's?" in the gaming industry......

I genuinely thought EA would led Bioware ship the new Mass Effect before deciding to close it down or not, making this move surprising, at least to me.
It's easy to say this now, but I don't think this would have happened if Zampella was still alive and at EA.

Well, that leaves Exodus and The Expanse as not only the closest, but also the only options for those of us that wanted to play something similar to a Mass Effect game, and it also leaves EA without another IP for fans to look after.

It depends on how much along the development of the new Mass Effect was. If it would still take several years until completion then I can understand why they would cut their studio now, if it was about to be finished, then it would have been a very stupid move (though in line with EA's actions).

Bolded: I wish Trip Hawkins never left EA to create 3DO. The console died and as a publisher led Might & Magic to get destroyed and gobbled up by Ubisoft, while as a boss at EA he was able to rein in all their more negative impulses. Until he left EA was a great studio and publisher, hence why studios like Bullfrog or Origin Systems joined them.

And yes, one less EA IP to worry about. At this rate I see the big publishers becoming entities that release just a single title every year, like EA becoming just a developer for Fifa EA Sports FC, while Activision just releases a yearly Call of Duty and Ubisoft every year a new Just Dance - while collectively sitting on a giant hoard of unused IPs.

When I ment with Zampella is that he was more than a corpo suit, he was a developer and could see what could work and fight for it. I don't know if there's anyone left at EA that has the knowledge and weight (and balls) to do that anymore.

As for the kind of games EA will do, PCGamer has an article about it:

https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/with-bioware-dead-ea-lays-out-its-next-chapter-and-its-pretty-much-as-predicted-guns-and-football-are-fine-and-everything-else-is-under-the-microscope/

(...)

I'll spare you the corporate gobbledygook about challenging assumptions, confronting assumptions, and imagining new possibilities, and cut straight to the chase: The plan is to do fewer things with fewer people focusing on its biggest franchises. What that works out to practically:

  • Shooters: More Battlefield, more Apex Legends, and "bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project."
  • Action-adventure: Marvel's Iron Man and the third Star Wars Jedi game are still happening, but "beyond that, we will concentrate our efforts on fewer simultaneous, large-scale projects."
  • EA Sports: Full commitment to EA Sports FC, plus a new American football game creatively codenamed "Project Gridiron," and Fight Night is coming back.
  • Lifestyle: The Sims will continue but "Project Lotus," originally presumed to be a sort of precursor to The Sims 5, has been paused. The Skate dev team, meanwhile, is being cut to "build a healthier and more sustainable business."

So yeah, shooters, Sport games and that's basically it. I'm not even sure The Sims are safe.

I'm actually surprised they used UE5 for that. One of the problems Bioware had with DA The Veilguard was that they were forced to use Frostbite, which isn't the best engine for an RPG.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the trailer.

Sadly am not surprised that Bioware was closed. They've lost over the years there best talent and have been stuck with shitty leadership time after time. Sadly they are a shell of there Xbox 360 days. And wow, I did not know they only had 50 developers left, I imagine they saw the writing on wall when the Saudi's bought EA.

Overall continued sad year for gaming, so many lay offs and painful game cancellations.

The meme from like 19 years ago when EA first bought Bioware has finally come to fruition, took longer than some expected

Bioware's sister company, Pandemic, was shut down just two years after the venture-capital firm that owned both companies was bought by EA.

Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about this. Sad, sure, for the employees, for the potential of new Mass Effect or Dragon Age but at the same time, Bioware's hayday, for whatever reason, is long gone. EA intervention to get them to make Anthem or restarting dev work on DAV twice had an effect. Andromeda wasn't up to par with the main trilogy and any new Mass Effect would have just been skating on nostalgia. As for Dragon Age, the overarching plot was going in the wrong direction from DA:I's DLC but it was obvious that's the only way they wanted to go and was intended from the off. So much for just stories for characters told in Thedas. DAV just wasn't the sequel DA:I deserved, different art direction, different gameplay, terrible plot, was Dragon Age in name only (similar how I think FF7 Remakes are really, "Shove action combat in, no one cares about strategy anymore".).

Bioware's strength was always characters with interpersonal relationships with their companions and other than some OK moments in MEA, none of their games since got anywhere close to the feeling ME Trilogy and DA Trilogy got.

DA is one of my favourite series ever an honestly, I'm fine with it ending. Time to move on and find something new. Larian has taken up Baldur's Gate mantle with good effect but while many wanted them to take DA, why would they? Larian riding high and no doubt Divinity will do numbers but DA is a risk. For Mass Effect we have Exodus and The Expanse coming to essentially fill a gap that has been absent for a lot time.

New era, no company can last forever.

Hmm, pie.

I'm sad for everyone who lost their job, but the brand and studio itself died a long time ago. Bioware was Bioware in name alone for many years now, I haven't been excited about a release from them for a decade or so. I think a lot of us older gamers give them too much benefit of the doubt due to their impressive pedigree and run of amazing titles in late 90s and early 2000s to 2010s.

I'm not surprised, nor am I sad to the studio go; only the employees. I hope they find better work elsewhere. Then again; with the majority now being people who worked under EAs thumb for the entirety of the stint at Bioware, this is perhaps the best they'll ever be. If you grow up in the sewers, the smell of feces might feel like home to you.

On a somewhat different note - shout-out to everyone who rooted for mergers, acquisitions and the expansion of already massive gaming companies, these past few years has shown what an amazing idea this market structure really is.

Now we've gotten to the point where game companies are being bought out by corrupt heads of state (like Prince Bonesaw) and/or oligarchs (like Larry Ellison, who now owns WB and associated properties like Mortal Kombat and Harry Potter, alongside Prince Bonesaw) by leveraging huge amounds of debt. EA has to make payments of $1.8bn a year to service the $18bn debt that was imposed on them by the PIF after they got bought out.
