Forums - Sony - ITS OVER Sony Interactive Entertainment to end physical game disc production in January 2028

Resident Evil 9 shows there is still very high physical demand in many relevant countries. Over 50% of its sales (despite PC skewing towards digital) in France and Japan were physical. Deleting PC may increase physical share to 60%~.

NA physical seems to be an outlier, only making up 22%, presumably in part because of limited shipments.

Unfortunately that data comes from ampere analytics whom have been proven to be way off their own estimates. So anything they put out I don't trust. Only Capcom know the real numbers, so unless they come out and give us the split for Resident Evil Requiem I'm trusting no one.

Now this isn't me "defending" Sony going digital only in 2028 as I'm boycotting buying new PS4/PS5 games, but I simply cannot trust an unreliable source.

And to nobody’s shock, Sony continues to sink even lower than they already have, arguing that “no reasonable person expects to own this thing we hit ‘purchase’ on” and that apparently, everybody buys the same digital copy on the PlayStation Store ‘cuz nobody else could buy the game if person A owned it outright. I’m not joking, they literally argued that last bit in court.

As Plaintiffs admit, Section 1 of the SPLA likewise explains that “The Software is licensed to you, not sold.” This makes sense. In the digital age, it is not plausible to allege that reasonable consumers believed they were obtaining ‘ownership’ of a digital game. Were that the case, then Plaintiff Edward Heycock would not have been able to obtain the game Resident Evil Requiem on February 25, 2026, for $69.99 from the PlayStation Store after Plaintiff Jason Mendoza had obtained Resident Evil Requiem on February 14, 2026, because Mr. Mendoza, not Sony, would have owned it then.

My IQ actually dropped reading that shit. Sony thinks we’re stupid for daring to think we own the shit we buy? That we should be entitled to not have it fucking stolen from our library after “purchasing” without a refund (basic consumer rights)? Well, I guess they win because hearing their whole justification for why it’s apparently ludicrous actually made me stupider, el oh el. It’s almost like owning that copy doesn’t mean you own the IP and the stuff on it.

I’d love for them to take PlayStation discs from somebody’s house and claim no property was stolen because it was only a “license”. My guess is, no, I bet the damn house it would not end well for them, that’s how confident I am it would net them jail time and a criminal record, though I honestly wouldn’t put it past them at this point.

Reid Boehm did a great skit on this:

I’ve lost all faith in humanity if the judge doesn’t immediately see right through the bullshit IRL like the cosplayed plaintiff(s) in that skit. That is one of the absolute dumbest things I’ve ever heard anybody say in my life, and that’s saying something, too.

Gross.

Given the recent case of them taking away purchased movies, it feels like a matter of time before the same thing happens with games on PS or some other platform, if it hasn't already and I just missed it.

Real rights for digital purchases are sorely needed.

There are some games on Xbox that can't be reinstalled after deleting them. Even though you bought them.

You best believe that will happen to more PlayStation games eventually. It has happened to a small few already.

This whole digital license issue is old news, but lol this lawyer.

Perhaps Sony needs to consider slightly different language for 'purchasing' of digital items.

That's already the case with P.T., which is now just a piece of vaporware, but it's not like that matters.

Btw, the physical version of FF7 Revelation is a disc that requires a download to play the game, felt like dropping this news here.

Yea it should say purchase a digital renting license, not make it look like you buy a digital"copy" of the game, you don't.
