Its needed because of:

-Ownership. Having something Sony cant just take away from you because of licenses running out or whatever reason they feel is justified.

-Options. Having the option to buy games digitally or physically. More options means cheaper games. Competition is always a good thing.

-Used games. The culture around used games are huge. There are thousands of conventions and stores around the world that sell and trade video games. It helps people discover franchises they never would have otherwise. Which can lead to them becoming fans and buying new games in that franchise. Its just a very social and fun part of gaming culture.

-Sharing. Lending games to a friend or family member or borrow one from them.

-Saving money. Selling your games if you dont like them or trading them in to a store to get new games or some extra cash if needed.

-Security. Not having to worry about Sony closing your account or getting hacked and lose access to your digital library.

-Collecting. Collectors enjoy having a physical representation of what they buy to display on their shelves. They appreciate beautiful box art and having a game room for their favorite passtime.

There are many reasons why physical media should stay around(and probably many more examples than what I provided).

Those are wants. Not needs. SONY or anybody else are not obligated to make sure the used game market is thriving. By the way, the Industry has ALWAYS hated the used game market. That goes all the way back to SNES/SEGA days.

Strange enough I don't think anybody has mention the only real concern and that is game preservation. 3 consoles in the future I should be able to access all the content I currently have. Does SONY have a plan for that? If they do the PS3 - PS4 thing at any point in the future where we lost our entire collection then definitely fuck SONY.

We dont need anything from Sony. Gaming is just a luxury we enjoy. I dont give a shit what Sony likes or hates. If they want my business and many others, they need to keep physical games around. How much they need our business is yet to be determined, but considering 82% of gamers bought the PS5 with the disc drive and some percentage bought the disc add-on to their digital PS5, they might be in for a surprise. We will see.

I did forget about game preservation for some reason. Without physical games we would have lost probably 50% of games from the 6th gen and down.

My gf bought me a disc drive yesterday and she said like he look at what they are saying.

It says from jan 2028 games won't be released on a physical format anymore.

Then it also says you can only buy 1 of the product because of HIGH DEMAND!

HAHA you can't make this shit up its so funny⁸

The removal of physical discs is such a short sighted decision that I am still perplexed as to how the clowns at Sony that are making these decisions are still employed. It wasn't enough to lose 100s of millions on their live service fetish which resulted in tons of lay offs and studio closures, price increases and etc. But now they are going to go forward with removing physical games that is royally pissing off their fanbase.

What they really don't realize however is how much damage this is going to do to Playstation long term. In the past, you have had many reasons as to why someone would choose a Playstation over PC. Things like exclusives, physical media, being able to pick up and play, having the living room experience with UI and controller inputs, lower up front cost and etc.

These days however, the reasons to get a Playstation over PC has been continuously decreasing and in fact, reasons to get a PC over consoles have been continuously increasing. Exclusives outside of first party are virtually non-existent. Valve has been developing SteamOS to bring the living room experience to PCs for many years now in order to merge the gap between the PC experience and console experience. Playstation has lower up front cost but it also has a fee for online and cloud saves while Steam does not. Steam also has better sales, better customer support and refund system as well as many other features like family sharing all for free. On top of that, you aren't locked to Steam on PC for games purchasing and sites like GMG and Fanatical gives pre-order discounts of 15-20% for most major titles. Essentially having multiple store fronts also allows for tons of competitive pricing and sales which is what we have seen many times for Physical games.

So what I am getting at is, Sony is essentially knocking out another reason that differentiated Playstation vs PC. Millions of people buy consoles for physical media whether it be using it to play physical games or watching bluray movies on it. Physical media itself is a form of exclusivity that PCs cannot do. And by getting rid of it, they are giving another reason for gamers to buy a PC and ultimately getting rid of what made console experience so unique.

I would love to see that this will impact sony playstation a lot financialy, and nobody truly knows we shall see in their next financial statement in 3 month?! But, even i know we are a minority even if we are 2mill strong thats nothing against the other 90+mill (or even more)

Just like the machines in the animatrix said to the humans.

Your physical games are a relic, a mere memory. Hand over your games, and a new digital only world awaits you. We demand it.
