Forums - Sony - ITS OVER Sony Interactive Entertainment to end physical game disc production in January 2028

What I just can't understand from Sony's perspective, is why announce the end of disc production now. When they showed the discdriveless PS5 with the disc drive addon, I was sure that was how the PS6 was gonna be, and then the PS7 would probably not even support that addon anymore and would be truly fully digital, and then they would end disc production, they would successfully boil the frog that way.
Instead they skipped all those steps and threw the frog straight into the bonfire, are they that confident in their market position?

Honestly this so baffling it makes me feel like it's based on some select people's individual gain in terms of satisfying shareholders on revenue/ keeping their job /insider trading or something of  the sort.

They have an incredible 6months of software planned. Aside from the price hikes they could of rode a huge wave of momentum between Wolverine, GTA, GOW...

Even if they wanted to separate the announcement from PS6 they could of announced it in March 2027 lol.

The alternative is waiting for the official announcement of the PS6, and there's no way that would've been any better.

They're basically given everyone (especially divisions or partners they couldn't inform beforehand) an 18 month heads up. This info would've leaked very easily, so better for them to get ahead of it instead of letting rumours and speculation run everywhere.

And Sony DADC already started the process of repurposing the factory for PS games like 2 years again. It would've been common knowledge soon enough

It's simple.

Sony was not projecting a record breaking year for Playstation now, which was a constant during the whole PS5 generation up until now, because of the RAM and SSD massive price increases, so the line that eternally has to go up to please shareholders would not happen and they would get displeased. We saw their shares get a boost the week they announced it, that was Sony showing them a perspective of a margin increase push is in the works, which they loved, being the vultures they are. Increasing monetization over the already existing consumer base and not considerably subdizing their next hardware was openly told to investors this year, it's all about that % increase to appease to them.

GTA VI was already making the move too, IMO the decision was very likely pushed foward several months because of the unprecented success of the code in a box for GTA VI, they literally swapped the disc drive model PS5 for the digital PS5 for the GTA VI ads a couple hours after the marketing effort started. IMO they rushed to announce it in the hope the community could side with them like they had just did for Rockstar.

The decision is long in the making, the fact the Insomniac leak had splits between physical and digitsl sales was very telling they want to do it for years now, as they were collecting data on it and they have been slowing down BD production (not only for games) over the last years two.

Ita game over for me btw, this is the end of the line for me, it was a fantastic run from snes till ps4/5.
Time to get those older games physical

Same here. Started with NES, then GB before SNES - but PS5 Pro is going to be my last (Sony) system. But I will now be buying more Switch 2 physical titles!

I will buy a PS6 eventually - not on launch - and will only purchase exclusive games on it.

My brother who hasn’t turned on his PS3 or used PSN in over 10 years decided to boot up his ps3 to play something that is currently DOWNLOADED on the console.

Licenses are expired and his PSN account is deleted. So games are gone forever

WOOOOO!!!!!

Playstation really has lived long enough to become the villain eh. At this point, we have to hit them where it hurts which effectively means don't buy wolverine and other first party Playstation games. Cause if the end result of all this backlash is their games still sell record breaking numbers, then they won't care at all.

If the PSN account is really gone, better check with another device (PS App on a smartphone, via PC browser or on an PS4 or PS5 of a friend).

They changed the password access on PS3 and Vita a few years ago to protect the accounts better: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/account/ps3-ps-vita-device-setup-password/

Also correcting the date and time of the PS3 could help, the battery holding that information was obviously empty after that many years (like the screen in the video says).

Well, that's DRM checking if the license you paid for didn't expire yet, and having a full game on disc wouldn't stop that from happening either.

Now, remember that storm a while back from new games needing a one time online access, that many people went on to defend because "it was only for 20 days" or whatever, and then everyone quickly moved on from that? Yeah, good luck with your game preservation on playstation.
