Who is the best president in Nintendo’s modern history?

Satoru Iwata [2002 – 2015] 24 50.00%

Total:48

If your answer is not Yamauchi, you are a lost cause.

Nah Yamauchi sided with Team Atlantis and shamed Yokoi out of Nintendo with the Virtual Boy. He was also the one who oversaw all the major flounders with Phillips CDi, Nintendo PlayStation, N64 & GCN third-party development struggles, etc. I’d go more toward Furukawa because he’s the only Nintendo president to ever keep the good times rolling after a successful generation— every other president screwed something up one way or another.

Again, you look at failures, not putting it in context with the stuff done. You don't do anything wrong, if you do nothing. But you are also not helping. Yamauchi and Iwata both made Nintendo what it is today, they took risks, and sometimes it blew up in their face. Furukawa is riding this wave created by his predecessors. But every wave will lose it's power over time if nothing keeps it going. And so far I don't see Furukawa do anything. Maybe he will in the future, but until then he is the worst of the three.

EDIT: To put it differently — not having a space program would mean no loss of life. In the Challenger and Columbia accidents 7 people died each time. You would say NASA is the worst for it. but without taking such risks they wouldn't have put people on the moon either. If you do nothing, you risk nothing and hence make no errors.

SNES, GBA, and DS followed up success with more success.

Depends on what you like more. Soulless, uninspiring, corporate dog (Furukawa) or the charismatic, more heartful ceo (Iwata), Iwata isn't totally innocent, Ive read some rumored stores of behind the scenes stuff about Iwata, and it wouldn't surprise me, I mean his mentor was Yamauchi, so.....

Please understand,
Iwata was the GOAT :P

What sort of things are you implying? Sounds serious.

The next few years will put Furukawa to the test; if he can manage to keep Switch 2 strong and healthy despite the increasingly hostile environment it faces, then he'll have proven himself as a strong leader.

So far, his tenure has seen mostly fair weather sailing, as opposed to the trials by fire Yamauchi and Iwata had to contend with.

I dunno, I mean the first new system under Furukawa's leadership is overpriced and so far in a year has massively underdelivered in terms of games, the complete opposite of the Switch's first year. Nintendo seems to have lost its way in their core market (games) and their respect for their customers. I love the movies they are coming out with but the Switch 2 is a big disappointment so far (maybe they'll turn it around but doesn't look good), and has so far only sold based on hype of being the successor to the final system developed before Furukawa took over. Literally don't know anything about the two men, but it'd be hard to say Nintendo's leadership is good at this moment given the lack of being prepared to start a new gen despite the Switch's longest lifecycle ever, and the horrible pricing on top of that. Not a good look for the first system released under him.

Furukawa gave us Everybody 1-2 Switch

Iwata did not.

Conclusion: Iwata wins

$450 isn't really "overpriced" when the console standard has been $500 since 2020 (and has risen since) and most similar handhelds cost significantly more.

I think the current market position the Switch 2 is in disagrees with most of your statements..

The price has clearly been accepted by most people, especially in the light of the other console options being 100-200 $ more expensive by now.

On the software side, i agree it hasn't been as spectacular as the Switch 1's first year, but massively underdelivered is not not something i would use for that. Also, software heavily depends on ones taste, so it might not have been for you, but obviously other people have enjoyed the output so far.

It might have been a disappointment for you overall, but you are not representing the general consensus around the Switch 2, otherwise things would look a lot different with Nintendos numbers.
