I want a new Nintendo General Direct, it's been too long since the last one. 😢

I definitely want them to return to the February-June-September formula for mainline directs since it's nice to know when to expect them and they can be a lot of fun at times. The next Smash getting announced will do wonders for them since they're at their most fun when you consistently get Smash character reveals in them.
Nintendo directs are not done as some gift to the fans or anything. It is a marketing tool.
Like press conferences of old, they are designed to make people aware something will be announced. Make sure their eyeballs are there.
More importantly, the format gets people to view ads (really what they are) for things they may not otherwise have done. You go into a direct thinking "hey maybe there will be a new Smash or Mario game". Then while you're watching for that, you wind up seeing something like Rhythm Heaven you may not otherwise have been interested and you go "oh hey, that's kind of cool". By encouraging people to watch a "show" rather than discrete trailers, they wind up watching more.
This really anything new, just a new format for something tech companies have been doing for decades and decades. Just modified to bypass the press and go right to the fans. It's a format that obviously works well, which is why tons of companies are doing it.
To the extent that some people on the internet are disappointed, I'm not sure why anyone, especially Nintendo, should care about that.

@bold: this is way too harsh. People just like getting excited about things, and talking about things they love. And count me among them. I love Nintendo Directs. I love the anticipation, and the unexpected reveals, and the chance to come together afterward and dissect what we all saw. Sure, there are some in the audience who are unrealistic, picky, or there just to downplay, but many more who are genuinely enthusiastic about what's on display. Nintendo announcing a game or a release date on a random Tuesday just doesn't have the same energy as an organized event that's broadcast worldwide. Also, in response to your final comment: it's not like an aggressive pre-launch marketing campaign and post-launch word-of-mouth are mutually exclusive. They reinforce and amplify each other. |
Yeah this is how I feel as well, Directs are great fun and help create buzz around both Switch 2 and its games, it's a winning formula that's worked well for over a decade now.
Random drops one at a time isn't as exciting.

Wow I'm kinda shocked how much you all prefer Directs... though at the same time, I feel like this should've been expected. The users here have voiced dissatisfaction with the current strategy by Nintendo as of late, far more than on Reddit, X, and ResetEra. Maybe at one point in time I would've much preferred a Direct presentation, but IDK these little mini-drops have really grown on me. Again, I don't want Directs to be done with, though I wouldn't mind if they weren't the main format of presenting titles. Maybe just save Directs for when they've got a TON of mega-hitters on their lineup. (I'm looking at February 2023, June 2023, September 2023, June 2024, and April 2025... these are among the best Directs Nintendo has ever done.)

This is the main reason I like them as well. I will watch a whole direct and might find something interesting that I did not know about. Games in franchises I'm already invested in will not go under my radar anyway, since I actively seek out news about them.
And I like the social aspect of many people having seen the same thing. Gives good ground for discussions and hype.
Not real preference, I don't usually watch Directs or whatever Sony does. I will read a few summaries, but I don't track games before release. I still haven't picked up Mouse PI, Pragmata and RE9. I have enough actual market games to care about that.
*having said that, I would like to know if Ocarina Remaster/Remake is real or just the next WWHD/TWHD falsity.

Directs were really more Iwata's thing, it doesn't look like Furukawa shares the same emphasis on them and in general prefers even tighter/smaller marketing to release windows and more emphasis on individual reveals through the Nintendo app.
So again, going on the past Nintendo management to try and figure out what they will do now is pointless. Clearly Furukawa and the newer board of directors have their own ideas on how things should be done.
Personally I prefer the old E3 setup to all of them, and even things like Spaceworld, TGS, and before that CES shows.
Last edited by Soundwave - on 25 April 2026Directs tend to show a broad spectrum of titles, especially general directs or partner/indie showcases.
For me to watch a trailer or an ad otherwise however means that the trailer or the ad have to be very memorable, because I don't go out of my way to watch them otherwise and here in Luxembourg that would be the only way I'd ever see those.
