is there any actual data on what share of sales are from new owners?

Digital ratios are higher on PS, but there's also a disc drive add on for the PS5 Pro and Digital Edition isn't there, so the total physical-enabled install base for Requiem to sell to will be higher than the 5.9m base PS5s in the wild.

I just looked at the chart. Requiem sold 1.8k on Switch 2 and 1.4k on PS5. You don't think most of these sales are from new hardware owners? Like 1k out of the 42k Switch 2 sold this week ?

I'm sure a substantial portion of them are from new owners, just not sure it'd be all/almost all of it.

Holy shit, I underestimated Tomodachi Life. I thought it would do big numbers, but over half a million, on just physical?! With digital included, this is probably closer to 1 million in Japan at launch.
And for a Switch 1 title in its 10th year, AFTER the release of Switch 2, that's insane!

What's even more insane than that is Switch 1 getting a notable boost to the point where it's actually UP YoY this week! That damn little system just refuses to die!

I do suspect most S2 versions of AAA games will have more longevity on the charts both because of the lower digital ratio but also the softer initial launches. More people are likely to find it after release as they're new to the audience.

For RE9, Whether that translates into a long term difference in terms of 4x1 ratio PS5 currently has over the Switch 2 version, we'd have to wait to see.

It seems that Tomodachi Life had the biggest launch ever for a system over 7-9 years old in Japan:

Last 3DS game with a 500+K first week was Pokémon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon, about 6.5 years from launch. It was also the last game to start over 100K.

Last DS game with a 500+K first week was Pokémon Black 2 / White 2, about 7.5 years from launch. It was also the last game to start over 100K.

Just after 7 years from launch PS2 had Warriors Orochi at about 380K. 8.5 years from launch Super Robot Wars Z opened at 360K. 9.5 years from launch SD Gundam G Generation Wars opened at 200K, and also looks like the last game to open over 100K. PS2's last game with a 500+K first week was Final Fantasy XII, 6 years from launch.

PS1's last game with a 500+K first week was Dragon Quest IV, almost 7 years from launch. Dragon Quest Monsters 1+2 about 7.5 years from launch was its last game with a first week over 100K.

And Tomodachi Life likely had around 1M launch including digital sales, so it had the best late gen launch of any game on an older system in Japan just by including its retail sales.

I don't think there is a big difference between digital sales ratio of PS/Switch 2 games in Japan. Pokopia had like a 50 % digital ratio at launch in Japan. At most the usual Switch 2 single player game has a 20-30 % digital ratio at launch while the usual single player PS5 game may have a 30-40 % digital ratio. What often matters more is how good retail stock supply is, lower retail stock like Pokopia had will push the digital ratio up enormously in Japan. Even during the Switch 1 era games like Xenoblade 3 had around 50 % or higher digital ratio in Japan looking at the CESA white paper sales info we got of its sales in Japan. So any digital advantage PS games have is likely not that high, when even some Nintendo games have a 40-50 % digital ratio according to CESA white paper sales info.

Switch Sports still being in the top 10 like four years later is glorious to see.
The Wii's legacy is alive and kicking.

"conventional thinking has always been that the digital ratio is significantly lower in Japan than in the West. While the digital ratio is indeed lower in Japan on average, we are at a point where plenty of games have an over 50% ratio. Granted that doesn't necessarily increase the total amount sold by much. But the overall point is that digital is on the rise in Japan"

This was Daniel Ahmed back in 2024 talking about  PS5 software.

Pokopia's digital ratio was reported as a new "record" for Nintendo (I think in the UK) and driven by shortages. Based off all other markets PS5 digital ratio is notably bigger than Switch 2, In Japan It may be smaller but I'd still settle on 20% difference minimum and generally I'd expect it to be higher tbh. Now it will climb eve higher now that 80% of systems being sold are digital only. That sort of thing does make a difference. Both to RE9s launch numbers but also the week to week differences we're seeing. PS5 is way ahead, the important thing is that the S2 numbers are consistent which ultimately could lead to it be a 100k+ seller over the years and alludes to new people checking out the franchise.
