I usually buy games I think I'll like, so I have at least some limited knowledge on it which makes it hard for games to surprise me too much in that sense, it happened a lot when I was young and had no internet, but I'll list one from the HD era.

Terraria

I got it on PS3 because it was so cheap, so why not.

Went into it thinking it was just 2D Minecraft as I heard before, which is partially true, but it was so, so much more.

I still remember when the first boss showed up, after a crypt message popped up out of the blue when I was digging. I was not ready for it, I didn't even know the game had bosses, but I loved it, and the more I played the game the more I discovered how much content it had, it's insane, the progression is great and it feels like you never stops discovering stuff, was easily over 150 hours in just a few days of playing it.

I too have it on PS3 and in Steam but I could never get into it, I have tried at least a few times. Maybe some day.

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

Definitely play the Steam version if you ever do, as the PS3 stopped being updated many years ago.

Did you get far enough to fight any boss? There is so much to do on that game.

Hollow Knight. This game is shockingly good, likely the best metroidvania ever made, and it is an indie developed by 3 guys who only have a few thousand dollars in donations and a dream. Still blown away by how refined and absolutely massive it is given the budget constraints. The bosses, the regions, the platforming sessions, the secrets you unlock are stellar. Even the combat is fun to mess around with, with how many charms and spells you can equip to completely overhaul your play style while fighting bosses.

Baldurs Gate 3. As a TTRPG fan who has been playing DnD for about 15 years now, I was really skeptical if they could pull this off. CRPGs are cramped with clunky controls and infuriating gameplay, as CRPG studios seem to have developed an obsession with turning combat systems, designed from their core to be turn based, into real time with pause slop. Well, not here, as Larian delivered the finest game of its genre yet. The companions really stick in your mind, and the huge amount of different story and dialogue iterations for events makes you eager to come back to see "what if I had done X instead of Y", that's how you end up having over 700h on it lol

Dark Souls. I was never a big fan of Dark Fantasy, and the rumors about it being excruciatingly hard made me skeptical this was another game that uses difficulty by either swarming you with enemies or making you stupidly weak. I was not expecting this to become my favorite genre at all. There are 3 things here that elevate it beyond other combat oriented action RPGs: map and boss design, build diversity that gives the series replayability, and a constant sense of danger that makes you thrilled to fight even the most generic minions

I could write a whole essay about why map and boss design in Souls are amazing, but here I want to specifically talk about point 3. In most ARPGs minions are quite weak and nothing but an annoyance while you traverse the world. In Dark Souls, even the weakest undead can become a menace if you do not respect it and treat it as a worthy opponent. That is why I can put hours upon hours into playing it, since I need to be deeply concentrated and the time simply flies away

I'm not big fan of platformers, so let's say Beyond Good & Evil (PC) and Ratchet and Clank 2 (PS2).
Shadow Man (PC) is great action horror, another game of not my genre but well made.
Couple first Harry Potters on GB are pretty much most I've gotten out of the franchise in any form, basically JRPGs.
Couple games that I got in collections I bought for other games in them that caught me by surprise were Mean Streets (first Tex Murphy adventure) and Star Wars: Battlefront (the original). Both games better than the ones I bought the packs for or any other in them.
And I enjoyed Sims 2 much more than expected.

I would put RE8 on the list. I adored RE4. RE5 was meh, RE6 was trash. I liked RE7, but didn't love the constant chases. RE8 felt as good, better IMO, as RE4. It was a return to glory. It was so much better than I expected.

To the Moon. I expected nothing from this random game I purchased on Steam for 2 bucks. And then it became one of my favourite stories in any video game. Ever. It made me cry like a baby. The story. The characters. The music. It was fucking perfect. Kan Gao absolutely nailed everything and it continued to deliver on the sequels.

Yeh, I don't game on the PS3 anymore. I didn't get far at all, I find the controls confusing and the lack of goals in games like that always make me lose focus and will to play, but Terraria is one of the games that stays on my radar.

Yeah, the game will tell you almost nothing, it lets you discover pretty much everything by yourself, you literally can fight a boss imediatly if you want, just have to wait for it to be night and talk to a NPC, but that would be nearly impossible to beat without a decent weapon you can find exploring the game, and some healthy upgrades.

I love this kind of experience, but even so, I would look at the wiki all the time to know what I could do with the stuff I found, as you can combine acessories with other specific ones to make an even better one, and sometimes the combine chain is huge resulting in some insane accesory that provides you with lots of functionality and stats.

I hope you can get in the mood to play it for a while some time, once you realize how much stuff is there aside from digging down.

BotW. Picked up the game with NS1 at launch just because that was *the* game to own (and 1-2 Switch was getting very negative reception). Didn’t expect to play it more than a couple of times… ended up sinking 270hr into the game AND had been converted to a “Nintendo fan.” Only having played Skylanders for the four years which preceded BotW, this was a major change.

Interesting. So you started gaming as a hobby around 2017? Mind to share your age at the time? It's generally not common for people start gaming after their teenage years. Even for people who doesn't have income, they will find ways to game in cheap machines
