Forums - Gaming - Games that greatly exceeded your expectations

Clair Obscur. The Witcher 3. Divinity OS. I wasn't anticipating any of them, basically just stumbled into them expecting good games, I didn't know they would be the best games and probably entertainment media I have experienced.

First Fallout in '97.

A friend of mine recommend this to me, knowing that I like RPGs. Fallout's intro played, Overseer, in first person view, told me what to do, and then the game switched to isometric perspective. Oh boy, was I disappointed. At the time I already played a fair share of first person open world RPGs and while I've played iso-CRPGs in the past and loved them, it's not what I expected for Fallout to be and not what I wanted to play at the time. But I kept playing...

Little did I know that, after an hour or two of playing it, I'd be completely hooked and go on later to consider it one of my favourite games of all time.

Modern Warfare 2019 was a game I didn't expect to be impressed by, and only checked out cos I kinda enjoyed the old MW games back on Wii/360 and it was only like $10 so it was a "eh, why not" purchase.

Having actually played it now, it's one of my favourite shooters of last generation; while using the same name as the landmark 2007 title was a pretty cynical move on the publisher's part, the game itself is brilliant.
