Forums - Gaming - Games that greatly exceeded your expectations

Interesting. So you started gaming as a hobby around 2017? Mind to share your age at the time? It's generally not common for people start gaming after their teenage years. Even for people who doesn't have income, they will find ways to game in cheap machines

I had turned 14 years old only a few weeks prior to Switch 1’s launch. The money used to purchase the system came from my Skylanders YouTube channel (Alpha Ambush. I had saved up a couple thousand USD over the two years I made money).

What sold me was the Mario Odyssey reveal trailer in the January presentation. I had never played any Mario games before, but the music of the trailer as well as the “Super real Mario Odyssey” video got me hooked! Plus my best friend at the time was a major Nintendo fan and he got me all in on the hype.

I choose what games to play like throwing mud at the wall, whatever sticks sticks. So with that in mind I tend to go into a game expecting the bare minimun but tend to give a wider range of games a chance. One game that more than exceeded my expectations tho (that comes to mind) was Pacific Drive. Pimp my ride with ghosts… why does it work so well 😆

14 is definitely in the age range the gaming tastes starts to get into form indeed makes sense. I thought you were older though, that's why I was surprised. No specific reason, just the average age of the users of this forum must be in the 40s

I guess Castlevania Lords of Shadow. I wasnt expecting anything and prior to it i had not really enjoyed any 3D Castlevania game at all. Plus i had read comments that it copied a lot of gameplay elements of GoW and DMC, and i was not crazy over the idea of a hack n slash Castlevania game.

But boy LOS came out and it blew my mind. Best Castlevania since SOTN as far as i concerned, and the hack n slash elements fit like a ring to game. Loved it. Shame LOS2 wasnt good.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk.

I waited 20 years to get a sequel or equal successor to Jet Set Radio Future. I was sorta obsessed for 20 years. It's why I bought de-blob on Wii U as the music kinda gave me vibes. It's why I bought Splatoon 1-2. It had similar vibes. Games like Hover were not great. While some stuff had vibes none of it really quenched that thirst. Bomb Rush is not just the sequel I wanted but it surpassed expectations. From the music to the look. Additions like bikes, skateboards but they even figured out the perfect way to tag without it being annoying like the first or too simple like JSRF.  They absolutely nailed it. I have no faith in modern SEGA for their reboot (visually wrong) and I am sure the sequel to Funk will be great. That said this game was so perfect. I am good for life. I got what I wanted and more. I don't need anymore.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

13 Sentinels was another one of mine.

I'm not normally into either visual novel/adventure type games or RTS, so a game that combines the two sounds like it wouldn't be my cup of tea at all.

Nonetheless, I was intrigued by its style and the praise it got for its story and uniqueness, so I decided to give it a go, and it became one of my favourite games on Switch.
