Forums - Microsoft - Things Xbox does well as a console platform

I really really like their Quick Resume option. This should be standard on all consoles and they need to figure out a way to do it for PC.

Sony probably won't bother with that ever because they don't have enough of a reason to do so and they can't just add it in a firmware update to PS5 as far as I know. I don't even think a firmware update would make it possible for PS5 Pro.

Me too. And also, nearly half of new physical PS4/PS5 games I order arrive with the disc loose in the box. Never have had this problem with physical Xbox games.

I hate that shit so much. I know exactly what youre talking about. Even ps3 games had that issue occasionally, although it was never as bad as ps4. I miagine ps5 is just as bad if not worse, i just havent bought enough games for it.

Green cases are great. I don't like the late 360 era ones tho where they hollow out the case and can easily be punctured. PS5 is just as bad. Cases are the exact same as PS4. On the bright side Blu Rays don't scratch too easily like CD's or DVD.

Speaking of hardware, one thing I think they do pretty well for the most part is engineering.

Yeah the RROD was a fuckup and the base Xbone and Series S were arguably a bit underpowered, but the OG Xbox, 360, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X were very powerful for their time and that power was easy to harness.

The One X in particular really impresses me since just a year later and not only did they make it significantly smaller than the PS4 Pro, they somehow made it a little smaller than the One S without causing any issues despite it being way more powerful.

Yeah the One X doesn't get enough credit IMO for how good a piece of hardware it is. It's a shame they didn't bother this gen with the Series, but then again, looking at the sales, such an investment probably just wasn't worth it to them.

The eco cases. Lol. No shit dude i used to buy boxes of brand new old school style 360 cases and just swap them out for those eco ones.

I also swap those out haha. A game store I go to has game replacement cases for 2$. It's worth it to me lol.

Totally worth it. Back in 2010 i could get a box of 30 for $30. I used to work for a game store that would somehow get the box art manual and cases, all vompletely brand new, and they used to gut it all and sell the parts individually online. Those cases with the holes are the worst. You know what else conveniently happened around that time? The box art for some reason became ultra thin and would either indent or tear easily through those spaces. Back when the cases were quality, so was the box art. Look at the art for any 360 game pre 2010 and youll see that its printed on firm and quality material. In 2011 and 2012 youll see the art is like thinner than a normal piece of paper. The 7th gen was awesome until it wasnt. Its like simultaneously the best and worst gen.

Up until the last year or so when everything when to shit, they were pretty good with pricing. For many years, the 360 was much cheaper than PS3 but offered a comparable experience. The 360, Xbox One and Series S got down to very low prices.

Strong disagree.  They charged, with is flatly wrong, and others followed.  Online should be free.  Only one doing online right and that is PC.

Unless you mean something else by internet age.

I was speaking to the infrastructure and how well it all worked. Before Xbox Live, the best us console gamers had had was Dreamcast and bare-bones Sega.net. Compared to that, XBL was an epiphany.

That is fair.  The ecosystem was a massive step up.

Did anyone mention HDD standard?

Obviously, they offer the greatest backwards compatibility, which is leaps better than PS and Nintendo. Overall, they just treat their legacy software with much more respect than their two main competitors. Nintendo force you into a subscription to play their old titles, which is frankly a disgrace. Sony is just fine with letting their back-catalogue die with the respective consoles, they do rerelease some legacy titles, but boy are there many you just cannot play on PS5. MS also just tend to have better deals on games, in my experience at least, especially digitally. I cannot find a statistical comparison though. At the very least they don't do personalized penalty prizes like PlayStation, where you pay more for discounted games if you are a core costumer. That's such a f*** you to their costumers, lol. The Xbox store just all around offers the best experience in my opinion.

Xbox has always done a good to great job with backwards compatibility. Quick resume is quite useful (though a couple of games don't work well with it, particularly Halo Infinite). Also, I've always preferred their controllers. I just like the stick layout better and the general feel of them in my hands, and honestly I prefer having the option to use either battery packs or just regular rechargeable AA batteries, rather than being locked into a built-in battery pack.
