Honestly? Just expand on what Star Fox Zero did. That game gets way too much hate. Just like Devil's Third, people and journalists insisted in playing them wrong. They tried to play DT as a third person hack and slash when in reality is a FPS with some third person action in it. And they tried to play SF Zero like a third person on rails shooter when in reality is a FPS on rails with a third person view for spatial awareness only.

If you judge a fish for its ability to fly... or something like that.

Oh, wow. It's refreshing to see someone who actually likes Zero. I had a lot of fun with that game. The motion controls and GamePad angles just worked for me. I know that's not true for everyone.

@OP: this is what I'd like to see:

  • Don't remake Star Fox for the third time. Let's get a new setting/premise/story that expands on the mythology
  • Embrace the rail shooter. I know it's an antiquated genre at this point, but it has huge upside
  • High replay value. That means leaderboards, medals, branching paths, hidden planets & sectors, and maybe even alternative endings. I don't mind if the game is 2.5 hours long, as long as I'm incentivized to play it again and again
  • While I want most stages to be on rails, I would like a few all-range areas in the vein of Rogue Squadron
  • Lots of vehicle types. That means Arwing, Landmaster, Blue-Marine, and Walker
  • Speaking of the Walker, I'd love for the game to introduce more opportunities for on-the-fly transformations
  • Bring back multiplayer! A four-player splitscreen competitive multiplayer mode would be most appreciated. I have very fond memories of playing Star Fox 64 with my buddies in high school and it would be amazing to bring back those feels :)
  • Please don't make it a Rogue-like. That said, I wouldn't mind if there was an ancillary "endless" mode with Rogue-like tendencies
  • Really invest in the audiovisual piece. Shooters benefit more than most genres when it comes to graphics, sound design, and music

Basically a direct sequel to Star Fox 64 with modern graphics and sound.

I liked Zero. I feel like any novel control scheme is treated as bad because its not going to feel as natural as using the controls youve been using for years and years.

Hmm...

The Wii U gamepad being forced into the control scheme of Zero is what made it such a chore to play. If it had traditional Star Fox controls it'd been much more enjoyable.

You are proving my point. You insist in treating the game as a bad third person shooter on rails because the controls don't work well enough that way.

If you use the gamepad and play the game on it as the main view and use the TV view just for space awareness, the game suddenly works. The problem of you guys is you keep trying to play the game like SF64, ignoring the Gamepad and just looking at the TV. Of course the game is gonna suck that way.

And no, alternating between both screens is not a problem. You barely need to look at your TV outside of all range missions.

I could work with that. ^^

In my opinion, there are a few distinct routes the series could go down.

1. Rail Shooter

This is the series norm, where most of the gameplay is moving down a set path with limited movement within said path. This is the method used by Star Fox, Star Fox 64, Star Fox Zero, etc.

Pros: This has historically been the most successful type of Star Fox game. This would likely be a relatively straightforward type of game to make, since you wouldn't have to reinvent any wheels, just stick to a formula that's had decades of polish.

Cons: Rail Shooters don't actually sell all that well. They are also hard games to make a lot of content for; you can play every possible route in Star Fox 64 in a few playthroughs totaling maybe 10 hours, and even Star Fox Zero can be played through in a long sitting. Also, how many devs out there are skilled at making big production rail shooters nowadays.

2. Ace Combat-like

This type of game would take cues from Flight Action games like Ace Combat. Though not exactly flight sims, these sorts of games would require more complex controls and settings.

Pros: Ace Combat style games can be successful. These games have plenty of content. Namco has worked with Nintendo plenty in recent times and can do so again.

Cons: Flight Action is less easily approachable for newcomers than Rail Shooter gameplay. This would arguably be a drastic divergence for the series.

3. Variety Third Person Shooter

What if some levels were rail shooting segments, some levels were on-foot segments, some levels had you fighting in a Landmaster in urban areas, etc? Star Fox Assault did something like this.

Pros: Easy gameplay variety. Probably easiest to make multiplayer for.

Cons: Possibly harder to balance and polish due to multiple gameplay styles. Arguably what fans would be least interested in.

Well, visual "movie-like" and rail-shooter + adventure. Fox, Falco, Slippy and Peppy owning different powers (arwing) to create a combo attack system. Multiplayer. Coop.

I just want Starfox to be Starfox; no stupid gimmicks that make the game worse, just an epic space shooter like the SNES and N64 games.

And to echo what's been said already, don't retread the original story for the umpteenth time, do something new narrative wise.

Play a hidden gem released in 2021 called Chorus stylized as Chorvs. That is exactly what I want from a new Starfox. You have open regions of space to explore but not too big. You have a story and mini side missions. Small Zelda like dungeons in your spaceship. The ship upgrades (given by story progression) are really cool. There is a demo out there but I think it takes place at the start of the game when you have a junk ship rather than the cool ship you get after that. I am just talking Gameplay not the story of that game. Go play Chorus. It's great.

Putting this on my purchase list for when I get home tonight. Glancing at word-of-mouth, sounds like a ton of fun. Will definitely give it a shot!

Gonna wait to read all these responses until later… love what I’ve glanced at so far! I do own a copy of SFZero for Wii U… perhaps I should give that game a shot one day. I’ve heard that the controls a bit convoluted, but once you’re familiar, the game is a really fun time.
