Nintendo is destroying the competition. Even PS5 is notably behind Switch this year in Japan. I shouldn't be shocked, since Switch is still in production.

Wouldn't be surprised if Switch beats PS4 next year too

PS4 is soft-discontinued globally and might have even been outright discontinued without Sony mentioning it yet.

PS4 might not sell 1,000 units in 2026 in Japan, and probably not much more than that globally.

Shoot, Xbox Series will sell more in Japan next year than PS4.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

100% that was a typo and meant to be PS5 not PS4.

Whoops typo I meant PS5

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Got it. Yeah, it would be sad if Switch and Xbox don't outsell PS4 in Japan in 2026. And yeah, Switch still might outsell PS5 in Japan in 2026 given Nintendo's dominance in Japan for about 20 years now largely from handhelds and hybrids. Wii sold a mere 12.7 million units in Japan. That's low for a console that sold about 101 million units. DS and PSP essentially switched Japan over to a handheld culture. PS3 sold a little less than Wii there, but that meant PS3 and Wii sold far less than PS1 and PS2 in Japan.

I think a lot of that is JRPGs. Wii had more JRPGs than N64 and GameCube, but not as many as PS1 and PS2. DS and PSP have a lot of JRPGs.

We have returned to 2016, it seems.

(I know this was a typo lol.)

Donkey Kong continues to show excellent legs; it may not have had an explosive launch, but word of mouth seems to be strong.

We could be headed for an all-Nintendo top 30 soon, with just a few PS5 games hanging in there.

I don't think we'll see much evolution in the software chart even with NS2 now getting much better support. The games Japan loves are the kind that Nintendo make and those with brand behind it... But I don't see many 3rd parties shifting to accommodate it, I think we'll continue to see Nintendo dominate 80-100% of the top 10 and then 70-80% of the top 30 (discounting reoccurring skus)

Kirby definitely landed where it needed to in Japan though. Glad to see such a crafted game finding success here because it deserves an audience... Just hope I'm able to get it on sale eventually

I think its more the fact that since PS1, a lot of third parties have built their audience fully on PS, meaning games like Yakuza, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Tekken and many more don't really have an audience on Nintendo consoles, those are all on PS in Japan. It would take a very long time for those PS connected third party games to build an audience on Nintendo consoles in Japan. Other third party franchises like Dragon Quest have no problem selling on Nintendo consoles because that franchise have continued to build an audience on both Nintendo and PS consoles.
