Which game wins in the short-term (CY’25)? Long-term (LTD)?

SMG1+2 [CY’25] [LTD] 13 43.33%

Ghost of Yotēi [CY’25] [LTD] 11 36.67%

SMG1+2 [CY’25] & Ghost of Yotēi [LTD] 1 3.33%

Ghost of Yotēi [CY’25] & SMG1+2 [LTD] 5 16.67%

Total:30

In response to Curl-6’s recent match up between GoY & Pokémon, I’m curious to hear what the VGChartz community’s thoughts might be on this match up: Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 (NSW) & Ghost of Yotēi (PS5). Seeing how similarly the two titles have reviewed, and glancing at the sales history of 3D Mario re-releases & Ghost of Tsushima, this match up — as comical as it may sound — could be an interesting one to watch.

For reference: Mario 3D All-Stars moved 9.07mil units between early-September 2020 and March 31st 2021, a feat which Ghost of Tsushima took nearly 2 years to achieve. GoT currently sits at >13mil LTD, whereas 3D All Stars was bottlenecked at 9.07mil for the Mario 35 Anniversary.

IMO— I expect GoY to handily beat Mario by both metrics. Mario 3D All Stars performed well for three reason: (i) FOMO. (ii) This title was released amidst the COVID pandemic, during a holiday in which Nintendo had nothing more than Hyrule Warriors & Pikmin 3 Deluxe, despite moving nearly 30min FY’21. (iii) There was no official means to play N64, GCN, nor Wii games on Switch up until that point, so the re-release did hold a lot of value for its $60USD price tag.

Ghost of Yotei will likely win.
The price of SMG1 + 2 will hold it back, especially because people that purcashed 3D all stars already have SMG1.

Mario Galaxy is just a port, doubt it's setting the world on fire with its high price. The sales ceilling I see for it is the 9 million 3D all stars sold

Ghost is a major release, should cross 10 million life time even if it needs help of a PC release

Ghost wins the short-term and long-term. It will get a PC release, and it will also get deep discounts eventually.
Galaxy and Galaxy 2 are some of the most acclaimed games of all-time, but I don't think compared to a big new game some HD/4K crossgen ports are going to make it the leader in sales globally. If they were $30-$40 for the pair, it would be more competitive. It might even outsell Ghost.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Ghost is a brand new game and a technical marvel. Galaxy's are nearly twenty years old Wii titles. To me, it's not a contest. Ghost be a mile.

Ghost in the short term and I lean Ghos in the long term. Ghost is currently the number one selling game on Amazon with Mario Galaxy being the 2nd best selling. Ghost should sell at least 10 million, you never know with Mario Galaxy but I'm not sure if the Switch 2 has even sold 10 million units yet.

Galaxy 2 only sold 7.5 million on the Wii. People are underestimating how much 3D Mario has grown since. We might be looking at another case of a port outselling the original.

I may be off the mark here, but I'm not feeling a lot of hype for Yotei so far, and I get the feeling that it will sell less than Tsushima. Bringing it more in line with Horizon 2 than Ragnarok, GT7, and Spider-Man 2.

Worth noting: SMG1+2 is a Nintendo Switch game (not NS2 exclusive). Also, 10mil for Ghost seems a tad bit bold (EDIT: if we’re referring to holiday quarter alone…which I’m just now realizing you did not say. Oops lol.)… I’m curious why you expect this? This isn’t a SM2 nor GoWR-tier release. Death Stranding 2 was a bigger launch than Ghost of Yotēi if we’re measuring based on previous entry’s LTD figures.

??? How did you calculate that? Ghost is much bigger than Death Stranding. His 10 million+ guess is perfectly reasonable, because Tsushima sold more than 13 million as of September 2024.
