Forums - Nintendo - Mario Kart Sales

With the release of Mario Kart World I decided to put together a Mario Kart sales thread, it will be interesting to see how well Mario Kart World sells in the end. Ever since Mario Kart launched on SNES the game has always been in the top 4 highest selling games for their respective system. Will be interesting to see how Mario Kart World does in the end. Starting with the 3DS, WiiU and NS1 Mario Kart has taken the #1 selling spot, will World be able to fill the same shoes with NS2?

  • SNES (1990): 49.10M units sold - Super Mario Kart came in at #4 with 8.76M = 17.84%
  • N64 (1996): 32.93M units sold - Mario Kart 64 came in at #2 with 9.87M = 29.97%
  • GBA (2001): 81.51M units sold - Mario Kart: Super Circuit came in at #4 with 5.91M = 7.25%
  • GameCube (2001): 21.74M units sold - Mario Kart: Double Dash!! came in at #2 with 6.88M = 31.65%
  • NDS (2004): 154.02M units sold - Mario Kart DS came in at #3 with 23.60M = 15.32%
  • Wii (2006): 101.63M units sold - Mario Kart Wii came in at #2 with 37.38M = 36.78%
  • 3DS (2011): 75.94M units sold - Mario Kart 7 came in at #1 with 18.98M = 24.99%
  • Wii U (2012): 13.56M units sold - Mario Kart 8 came in at #1 with 8.46M = 62.39%
  • Switch (2017): 152.12M units sold - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe came in at #1 with ~68.20M = 44.84%

Did a thread and poll on this in April; the most popular estimate was that the game would sell 40-50 million lifetime:

That WiiU attach rate!
The sales on Switch are still more impressive, that was a system that sold more than 10 times as much and still the game got to 44% attach rate. This is crazy.

3DS-FC: 4511-1768-7903 (Mii-Name: Mnementh), Nintendo-Network-ID: Mnementh, Switch: SW-7706-3819-9381 (Mnementh)

my greatest games: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024

10 years greatest game event!

bets: [peak year] [+], [1], [2], [3], [4]

Anyone who wonders why Mario Kart 8 was milked for so long and why Mario Kart World is a launch title and $80 needs to look at Mario Kart 7 onward. Look at those results. Mario Kart 8's Wii U attach rate is insane, especially for a game that was not commonly bundled with Wii U.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

This IP joins the ones like FIFA, COD and GTA that are extremely popular with public but I simply can't get the appeal. It's a very fun game to play for a few hours, but after playing all tracks a couple of times the repetition of the gameplay loop gets a bit tiring

I'm probably getting World one day if it's heavily discounted (~40 USD maybe), or buying second hand

Playing with friends makes it a ton more fun. Also, have you tried for triple starring the gold trophies in the 150 cups. You start to realize just how precise you need to be. And 200 cc is insane.

But there are plenty of games that aren’t for everyone. I was never a fan of MK until MK8, and then it clicked.

I started to get gold trophies in every cup in 150, but quickly lost motivation

I believe the issue is I don't feel the skill mattering much in this game. When I play I game like this I expect to have a perception I'm getting better. I simply feel MK to be too... RNG based I guess? As if the RNG is what to define when I win and when I lose the track

The game doesn't really give me a feedback in what I need to do to be more precise/skilled, since it's extremely forgiving I don't know when I'm playing optimally and when I'm playing suboptimally (always have the impression I'm at #1 when I'm lucky, and #2 or #3 when unlucky)

It's totally different from something like Crash Team Racing, when it's pretty clear when I'm having a good race and when I'm playing like shit, I know exactly what I need to do to get better in each track

There are some tracks where the feedback is much clearer though. There is one rainbown race where it's pretty obvious I need better control when slowing down and sliding. It's one of the hardest tracks in the game and is exactly one I'm able to consistently gets #1 because I slowly learned from my mistakes on how to play better instead of justing praying for good items haha

The fun for me comes when playing online or with friends. Single player on every Mario Kart (except World because I haven't played it yet) is terrible and indeed gets boring really fast.

I think I only have one friend with Mario Kart, and I've found online multiplayer kinda boring as well :/

For me, I love Mario Kart, have played most of them, it was always one of the main reasons to get a Nintendo system. Theres a lot of mainstream games I have never played, I never played GTA5 or any CoD or Fifa game, but I do love Mario Kart and this would be a game to make me buy any Nintendo system. I have played many many hours of battle mode with my friends growing up. (for the record, I never owned a WiiU, NS1 and do not currently have a NS2 but I have been seriously considering getting a NS2 just for World).
