The Japanese gaming market has been dead long ago. It is the Western market what matters the most now and the Playstation 5 dominates it. Now PS5 gots its big Sony exclusives and all Xbox games coming to it. Once GTA 6 lunches, the PS5 will even dominate more in the west. The Japanese gaming market is now nich market.😁

Lmao niche market but 36 million Switches sold.

And to counter his argument: One of the bestselling consoles worldwide, way more than the PS4 and leaps and bounds above the PS3 and PS1. And all this without any CoD or GTA.

This is evidently false. Nintendo have never sold more hardware and software in Japan than they have during the past 8 years. Just because PS sell less than previously in Japan doesn't mean it isn't a big gaming market. Even PC gaming is bigger now in Japan than ever before. The only thing that has declined the past 10 years in Japan is PS hardware and software sales.

Nintendo is also incredibly popular in the US, and Nintendo is incredibly competitive in the US market, just look at Nintendo hardware and software sales in the US for decades at this point.

The *Console* gaming market is certainly not dead but it has to be looked at as a holistic whole, not any individual platform or publisher. If in 2007 you had 30 titles all selling 500k+ software in Japan, how does that compare to modern day? Nintendo having a handful of mega hits doesn't necessarily compensate for an overall decline in software purchases and gaming interest.

In the digital age I'm not sure we ever got a clear picture with what is happening with Japanese software overall. I'm very curious to know whether its been stable, declining or increasing.

Now there is finally synergy with 3rd parties global efforts and Nintendo's hardware, I'll also be very curious to see whether the Japanese market has a big software boom. Was it just that not enough developers were making titles for Japans preferred platform or has tastes shifted in such a way where the market is in dominated by only select few titles etc.

I don't think we actually have data to say this but I'd love to see it. As hardware evolves, I think the key indicator of market health is software.
