LOL, Shave, I remember those from my days of watching SNL in the 80s and 90s.

yeah, SNL was so great back then.
well, i brought up more discussion of how we should deal with terrorism which happened today in the Ukraine thread, because both Russia and Ukraine have a diaspora of people leaving their respective nations and it is therefore relevant to that thread. It's so horrible that these tragedies happen. I asked Ryuu what he thought about it and i guess i'll have to wait for his response.

But a 5 year cycle would be a terrible idea bearing in mind production costs and diminishing returns. And it was never really the standard gap between successful consoles. It was always 6-7 years barring rare cases like GBA to DS (which iirc was rushed out of concerns about PSP dominating) and MegaDrive to Saturn (which was a failure).
GameBoy Advance launched 12 years after GameBoy, ignoring GameBoy Color.
Personally I would be fine with 8-10 years cycles, because technology just isn't advancing meaningfully anymore, and I'd upgrade my PC or buy a PS5 Pro if I care. Eventually, mobile phones and smart TV's will replace console/PC as the primary "console/PC gaming" devices, because the average person won't care for the bells and whistles highend consoles and PC's provide. Genshin Impact (console tier game) launched on mobile phones in 2020 to an unprecedented success. In 10 years, god knows how many major games will launch simultaneously on consoles/PC and mobile.
Perhaps game engines will suddenly evolve to a point where highend hardware will be required for unique experiences that are obviously impossible on 2035 mobile phones, but I'm not holding my breath.
Last edited by Kyuu - on 02 January 2025I would guess 2028.
PS5 released 4 years after the PS4 Pro, and 4 years after the PS5 Pro will be in late 2028.
PS1 to PS2 to PS3 had a 6 years gap each.
PS3 to PS4 to PS5 had a 7 years gap each.
It looks like it's time for the 8 years long generation.
2027. I hope 2028. Damn, if anything is said about this gen is that developer don't know how to optimize games or we need another gen for more power. All that was done away with in the 8th gen like ailising, jaggies and certain image quality things have all returned and brought with them new cool features like flickering on reflective surfaces or textures flickering in and out of existence really fast as well as artificating on not only performance but quality modes among other hinderences like texture pop in, asset pop in (FF7 rebirth) and some seriously screwed up ways of upscaling, if you look at FF7 rebirth up close the image is composed of visable rectangular blocks.
Quality modes being upscaled with Ai (Alan Wake 2) what a fantastic idea and then the absolute clunkiness of some 30 fps quality modes whoch seem more lile 15 fps for some reason, 30 fps was never that bad and never effected the camera or controls in such a negative, clunky way. If Alan Wake 2, with all it's sacrifices can make 30fps feel smooth and have the camera behave smoothly then all games should be able to do it and it should be the first thing, the most basic requirment than need to be met because they arenmaking their games unplayable unless you go performance mode and that's pretty fucked up. Something has gone wrong, when Naighty Dog and other Sony first party can make games on base PS4 that look and perform far better than many PS5 third party games, something has gone terribly wrong somewhere.

Most likely 2028 and Xbox by 2027. Going earlier is a risc for Xbox as the value of Xbox could be viewed a bit more negatively with these days console prices. Of the console is going to cost 500 plus dollar it better lasts for more than 6 years.
PlayStation can't wait much longer than 2028 if Xbox releases in 2027. You can't give your competitor too much of a headstart. If Xbox releases at the same time as Playstation, best case it equals this gen, which is not great for Xbox.
Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar
Sony cannot launch any PS6 before late 2028 (at least): Many of its studios barely launched anything or anything at all for the present console and they also decided to launch that (stupid) Pro revision in the market 2 months ago.
MS would have to launch its next console by late 2026 at max. Series is totally stalled in sells, and MS decided (accurately) to not go for a "Series Pro" but for a cheaper digital version of X for users who do not care about physical media. Holding on Series until 2027 will be TOO much time lost.
A new MS console by 2026 will relent the PS5 sells in US, and it will get a huge time advantage against PS6. Remember, those consoles are just capped PC revisions... so, a Pro revision fucks you up because all the games have to work well with the original model, a sustancially worst machine, and you can't exploit well the new hardware in the games. A new generation has not this problem, and you can go for it with no fears. And 2026 seems a very nice date to do it,
I cant wait for the barely even visible graphical upgrade
