Favorite Console War?

SNES vs. Sega Mega Drive 27 50.00%

Xbox 360 vs. PS3 21 38.89%

Other 6 11.11%

Total:54

I picked other,

PSX vs N64 was more intense than both of those combined. It was the first one where the Internet was a factor at that point - and it saw a lot of industry changing defections of Nintendo third parties to Sony, such as Square, Enix, and Capcom. In the end, it saw the topple of the dominant video game company after a 10+ year reign.

Nintendo vs Sega was pretty big in marketing, but I don’t think most people cared too much aside from the Sonic vs Mario and Sonic vs Donkey Kong Country parts. By the time I got onto the Internet, this one was mostly passé, although I recall comparisons about DKC and Phantasy Star/Lunar vs Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger that got heated. But felt Final Fantasy moving to PSX dwarfed it.

Do you mean Wii/DS vs PS3/PSP? Because PS3 vs Xbox was so minor/forgettable that I don’t even recall there being any kind of a console war there. Wii vs PS3 also had the marketing strategy war, and Sony creating the PS Move and such. Nintendo started pulling back the Japanese industry in a big way during this generation. Nintendo pulled Dragon Quest as a console exclusive during that generation.

I'm with SanAndreasX, if Sega gets the benefit of a head start, then its only fair that Nintendo gets to make up the time later.
Nintendo very much earned their ultimate victory over the Megadrive, through pushing amazing games like Donkey Kong Country, A Link to the Past, Mario World, Super Metroid, Yoshi's Island, Starfox, F-Zero, etc.
It's not their fault Sega bet the house on shit like 32X and Sega CD and lost.

But they quit the 16-bit war while they were ahead, curl. lol. So how does it make sense to credit Nintendo? I mean, Sega was kicking Nintendo's ass in the US up until SOJ foolishly decided to divert resources toward the upcoming Saturn. SOA knew this, and they tried to convince SOJ, but SOJ told them to get stuffed and it was only then that the SNES overtook them.

Also, I'm not really talking about total unit sales. I'm talking head-to-head, launch-aligned sales. The Genesis ended up beating the SNES annually... until 1994... which just so happens to be the year Saturn launched and the parent company was like, "See ya".

Late response, but I wanted to talk about this:

I wouldn't say the Saturn is the whole story, or even close to the major reason. The Mega Drive support was still quite strong in the last few years of the 16-bit era. In fact, Sega published more games for the Mega Drive in 1994 than any other year. 37 on the base unit, 18 more on the Sega CD and 32X add-ons - and these included Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Streets of Rage 3, Shining Force II and Shining Force CD (Sega CD), Ecco: The Tides of Time, and Virtua Racing. Sega (much like Nintendo with companies like Square and Rare) had tight relations with third parties (like BlueSky who brought games like Shadowrun and Vectorman) and published numerous titles from them.

I would say SNES's victory has more to do with the incredibly strong software SNES brought to the table in 1993-1996 starting with Secret of Mana - but in 1994 things really got hot with what was probably the single most hyped game of the generation - Donkey Kong Country hype was kicked off with Nintendo's first treehouse video, and these would be a precursor to modern video marketing campaigns (particularly Nintendo Spaceworld and E3 video reels, and later the Nintendo Directs).

The original Treehouse video and the game where Nintendo's Treehouse takes its namesake - Donkey Kong Country:

Donkey Kong Country would go on to become the highest selling non-predominantly bundled game of the generation at 9.3 million and best selling game of the generation that wasn't a Super Mario Bros platformer - the trilogy would go on to sell 18 million units on the SNES. It's games like this that would go on to help Nintendo dominate the last part of the generation, and it would also dominate the first couple of years of the PSX and Saturn.

I love how it's still going on on Twitter and PS fan boys are just kicking Xbox fanboys while they are down and the Xbox fan boys are living in this state of denial and still fighting back like Japanese soldiers in WW2 who didn't know the war has ended. It adds some layer of... idk, I suppose it's levity at this point. What's cringe inducing though is that these people are grown men and at the head of them is some guy making money off, of the rest by riling them up for engagement.

Switch vs PS4/5 was a fun one, with the underdog coming back from the brink of the abyss to challenge and ultimately surpass the market leader.

So Switch is the USA!

It was crazy to watch Switch and PS4. When Switch launched, my initial lifetime thoughts were 3DS numbers, maybe lower at NES numbers even. I saw SNES numbers or even lower as a possibility, but unlikely. Who can blame me after Nintendo's spotty history of home console sales and a handheld like 3DS that sold a little under half of DS despite having many of the same features and popular games like Pokemon and Mario.

I wasn't on this site until about exactly 10 years ago, but with how much PS4 got right at launch compared to Xbox One, 100 million was a lock. And before PS5 launched, I saw 120-125 million as very possible. And I stand by to this day Sony could've sold 125 million units or a little more than that if they kept making more PS4s than they have since PS5 and if they had the PS4 Slim permanently cut down in price to $200-$250.

But as we've said many times on this site, these corporations aren't looking for a sheer number of units moved. Switch would've already passed DS by now globally if that was the case. Nintendo has the money in the bank to sell Switch Lite for $130-$170, Switch for $200-$250, and Switch OLED for $300 or under. And they would still be profitable in those cases. It's just they would be clearly less profitable, and Nintendo is clearly content with the sales of controllers and software as well, so they don't need to have Switch hit a lifetime total of 165 million units or higher.

Switch has a shot of nearly matching PS2's totals or going slightly above. But Nintendo doesn't need to hit that milestone. They've already won in profitability compared to the PS2 by a significant and obvious margin. And if Switch 2 is a big hit (likely) they'll have another win over PS2 as PS2 was succeeded by PS3 which bled billions of dollars.

I don't think any video game platform will ever crack 200 million units or more. The cost in labor and parts seems too intense for that to be worth it, especially since consoles aren't popular forever during their lifespan. And many times when the sales go down after a peak, they don't have go up again year on year. 3DS was an odd exception.
