Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo to announce Switch's successor this FY, Switch 1 Direct coming in June

Now where is new Donkey Kong country starring Dixie

Around the Network

Nintendo pretty much always has a June Direct to showcase their software lineup for the second half of the year, and it makes sense to stick with this strategy if they really want to ship 13.5 million Switches this FY.

Their ambitious forecast suggests that either they have some seriously major software yet to the announced for later this year, or perhaps a new hardware revision, or possibly both, cos there's no way they're reaching that mark with just ports, minor software, and the current SKUs.

Don't worry, that's where we get the unexpected actual reveal for a new 3D Mario game + Metroid Prime 4 !

Obviously, if Zelda could get two major games on a single console gen, why not 3D Mario lol ...

I mean I'm only half joking saying that. Most likely the next 3D Mario is reserved for the Switch successor but heh, ya never know with Nintendo 😉

Yes, but that showcase to reveal their new console could have been the June direct.

If they have a holiday of only Switch games/hardware to sell, it wouldn't make sense to skip a June direct. Have one more showcase of Switch (June is literally a few weeks away).

A few months down the line once all the final switch announcements are out the way, have a showcase for switch 2.

Furukawa shared some words about hitting the fiscal year sales target: https://nintendoeverything.com/nintendo-president-on-keeping-switch-sales-going-successor-announcement-may-have-some-impact/

“Nintendo Switch hardware sales remain relatively strong, but we are now in the system’s eighth year, and we recognize that it is becoming more challenging to maintain momentum as time passes.

Even so, during last year’s holiday season, many new consumers picked up a Nintendo Switch system for the first time, particularly children and families in markets outside of Japan. We will release new titles this fiscal year and, in addition, many people have watched The Super Mario Bros. Movie through various means since its theatrical release, so with factors like that, we believe we will be able to continue to generate new demand.

Also, there is a large catalog of existing Nintendo Switch games, so if we can effectively convey the appeal of these evergreen titles, we believe we can also pursue the demand for multiple systems in the same household, born from the unique value of Nintendo Switch.

We do not think the announcement of the successor to Nintendo Switch and future related communications will have zero impact on Nintendo Switch sales. However, we hope to maximize sales this fiscal year by maintaining a good balance between new demand and demand for multiple systems. Our hardware sales forecast of 13.5 million units for the fiscal year will not be easily achieved, but with the intention of challenging ourselves, we have set this number as the initial fiscal year guidance.”

Yeah, truly a believer in his cause. Furukawa is truly passive, yet ambitious in his long term strategy for the Switch ecosystem.

Don't how this will pan out for the fiscal year but, I guess it's time for them to release another round of marketing to convey the appeal of it's system by its sheer quality of it's library.

There has been news that Nintendo will be having mini presentations to showcase the Successor, just like how they advertised the Super Mario Bros. Movie. So expect to see more news for the Successor throughout this FY.

President Furuwaka says it will be challenging to reach 13.5M, that is rather interesting. We will see some major marketing this second half of the FY, and some major changes to the Switch either in the looks of a price cut, bundles, or a new revision.

This is just pure speculation and personal wants, but if Nintendo is truly trying to get multiple Switchs in the same house they need to do any of the following:

  • Provide free local network cross play between Switch units
  • Provide cheaper NSO
  • Provide more games that lean heavy into local network and/or NSO
  • Provide more new Switch designs, or release old ones.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 160 million (was 120 million, then 140 million, then 150 million)

PS5: 130 million (was 124 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 54 million (was 60 million, then 57 million)

Cheaper NSO ... the family plan is already very cheap.  You get 8 members for 35 a year.  Hell I'm pretty sure someone from VGC is still getting free online for their switch from my Family plan.

If anything it would be nice if they found a better way to share software (it would be a good way to push digital).  It sucks that I have to spend $180 for 3 members of my household to participate in a Splatfest together ...

You know, I really didn't realize how close June was. Time flies. So maybe you're right. I still feel like June is the opportune time to do an announcement like this if you're going to do it this year but I suppose it's possible they announce it later in the year. I would still bet on it being early next year.

Provide a SKU with OLED without dock (the household already has a dock) for lower price.
