I'm astounded people think 60 fps to 120 fps is diminishing returns.  Makes me wonder how many people have really given it a try on a 120 hz monitor or TV.

I have an OLED with 165 Hz. Surprisingly, I only feel the difference between 60 and 120 fps when working. The mouse cursor is much smoother and typing also "feels" better. But in gaming, I don't notice the difference at all. I'm not saying that 120 fps is useless for everyone because of that. But for me personally, 60 fps is good enough. =D

Nice summary; one thing though, Hitman is 1152p as per DF, with DLSS on top of that, so significantly above PS4.

Also just a heads up, Redkong is an alt account so there's no point in engaging with him, he is purely here to downplay and concern troll.

Hitman on the S2 also hits low 20 fps in certain areas.  So far the S2 seems to struggle maintaining stable fps.  Hitman also has low resolution background NPCs.

Hitman's well above 30fps for the majority of gameplay though, and IOI have stated that performance improvements are coming.

Ports early in a system's life not having ideal performance is pretty common.

Outlaws isn't cut back on Switch 2 cos of RT specifically, it's cut back cos it's an ambitious open world title that pushes PS5 and Xbox Series hard in terms of everything from detail to asset streaming, to the point where it maxes out at just 30fps on Series S with drops to 720p.

It's not in any way an indication that the hardware can't do RT with a stable framerate or a decent resolution, just that a high end home console game in general will require compromises to function on a contemporaneous portable device, which we already knew.

Sure.  My 4090 can't do high RT without massive fps hits... but the S2 can!  Dude, be reasonable.  RT is EASILY  the biggest fps killer when it comes to graphics.  High RT with spider 1, which is a ps4 game, drops my 4090 to below 60 fps.  I really don't think you understand how much RT kills performance.

The RT that's stressing your 4090 will be a lot more demanding than the RT we see on current consoles though.

Agreed but when I said console and the S2 are doing soft RT I was challenged on that.  And even on low RT the 4090 takes a hit.  The S2 will take a hit with any meaningful RT, zero debate on this one.

60 fps is good, very good.  My position isn't 60 fps is bad, but rather there is still significant benefit above 60 fps.  I'll concede I can't tell a difference between 90 fps and 120 fps.  But going from 60 to 90 is stark.

We have the same TV.

S2 ray tracing will be basic compared to a PC, absolutely, don't get me wrong.

It can be still be an improvement over 8th gen at the same time though.

This is one of those things where we're gonna have to wait a while and see what developers do with it; thus far we have precious few examples of Switch 2 games period, much less ones pushing specific kinds of rendering.

It would be interesting to see Nintendo have a crack at RT in a first party exclusive for instance, but given they tend to shy away from pushing fancy tech I'm not holding my breath.

Given Nintendo's art style in most games, I'm expecting Nintendo will use NS2's RT capabilities (as low as they are) quite successfully for some visuals aspects - they are not mad to go full RT and I think, just like Sony did with Ratchet and Clank, they will leverage tried and true "old" techniques with some RT sprinkled in where it matters the most.

Agreed, which is where I think the RT benefits will be small.  RT is super exciting, I just think we are a good generation out before we really see the massive impact it has.  Kind of reminds of the OG xbox when it had a few HD games at 720p.  We could all see the huge jump it offered, but took a generation before HD really become the norm.

Yeah, for RT to truly shine as intended we'll need to wait for next gen and see what big studios with their in-house engines can do.

Not sure I would compare this gen to 6th - OG XBOX was technically quite a bit above other consoles, not in the small part due to programmable pixel shaders and HDD, and lot of games show how much ahead it was.

Out of curiosity has anybody tried frame generation? No idea if the S2 supports frame generation, but I tried it and hated it. Upscaling is amazing. But the few times I tried frame generation (native frames were 60 to 80) it resulted in crazy lag and smearing picture quality. I was wholly unimpressed with frame generation, could be better on the 5000 series I suppose.

From what I've seen I think it's safe to say that S2 is at least somewhere between PS4 & Ps4 Pro (ignoring features that would make some games impossible on those two consoles), but I think the first couple of months is too early to assess the full capabilities of any console.

Hopefully as devs get more familiar with the hardware we'll see it close the gap with PS4 Pro and maybe even surpass it, def too early to tell - hell, Nintendo themselves haven't even pushed the console yet, with their first 2 games being DLSS-free.
