Forums - Sony - New PS5 model officially announced

Original vs New design?

Original 27 45.00%

New 18 30.00%

Where is the PS6? 15 25.00%

Total:60

I am happy with my original physical media version.

I don't really care what it looks like, new one looks fine. I have never really particularly liked the look of the slim models, PS2 slim and PS4 slim were decently like their original. PSOne and PS3 slims were not good looking imo. But again, I usually don't care enough that I wouldn't purchase based on that. Interesting that it is neither cheaper nor called a slim. I wonder if they are going to release an even smaller named slim in a year or two or three alongside a PRO a few years before PS6. I imagine that a true slim would then be the digital one and the PRO would be the physical one.

Since they decided to make it actually shorter, I get why they didn't try to make the new ones compatible with replacement panels.

They might have talemetry that shows most people have their PS5 horizontal so they decided to include the horizontal bit and charge for the vertical stand. Not sure I like that overall since its not cheaper out of the gate and the digital (which I shun anyway on principle) is more expensive.

It technically is a slim relative to PS5's original size. But it isn't sized like a typical slim console, because the original PS5 is a fat mofo. I therefore name it Unfat PS5.

Meh, no preference

PlayStation's inflated ego is on display once again. Slim models are supposed to be cheaper than standard models, not the same (or more in the case of the previous Digital vs the Slim Digital). Also, it seems like a bad business practice to announce this a mere month in advance. This should've been announced between June-September.
I'm so glad I didn't get a PS5 in 2023, because I would feel extra salty right now.

I mean... MS wanted/wants to release a slim for the same price *without* the disc drive.

I love to see the digital versions being expensive. Physical all the way!

If the bulk of the size of the original model was because if the can to keep the noise down, will the slim one being 30% smaller make it alot louder as a result?

They've made a lot of process improvements internally, even with the current form factor. A lot of the internal stuff has been shrinking.

I think a month is a relatively long time. You don't want to see a sales drop because people are waiting for the slim model.

I looked at Xbox, and it's more common to release the same week as announced than it is to be more than a month in advance.

Xbox 360 S: announced 4 days before released in the US

Xbox 360 E: announced the same day as released in the US

Xbox One S: announced June 13th, released August 2nd

Xbox One S All Digital: Announced 3 weeks before launch

Yeah, but I still think there will be another massive internal changes for a new model next year, together with the Pro.

I guess we do should consider it the Slim and if my prediction is right that would be a Super Slim case, the thing is, a Slim model not being cheaper... just doesn't sound right to me, even more as the internal changes have come before it and not with it.

Still 3 cm too long to fit in my TV shelf. Sigh...

So the PS5 slim... is a full phat PS3 in size? No wonder they didn't call it a slim this time around...

They straight up made the seperate Disc Drive almost 60 % more expensive in Europe since the difference in price between the models is larger there... Sony once again proving they hate Europe and somehow it's their biggest market.

I'd imagine the SSD situation is going to be pretty similar.
It seems Microsoft got it right with the SSD Expansion Card (despite the price when not on sale). I doubt Sony will ever go that route this generation. The launch of the PS5 Slim would've been the time to do it.
