For PS5 to beat the PS4 by a notable margin, it needed a longer life and 3 things to happen by or in 2024:

1. A permanent price drop.

2. GTA6 and Monster Hunter Wilds.

3. Decent 1st party true exclusives.

Contrary to my own expectations, none of these is happening. Unit costs aren't going down even after 4 years and a "slim" model. GTA6 and MHWilds (which would have helped sustaining strong sales in Japan) aren't coming til 2025. And the 1st party lineup is mostly cross-gen or available on PC. Helldivers 2 is a sleeper hit that is shaping into something unexpectedly huge, but it's also a day 1 PC release. Love it or hate it, more and more people are leaving consoles for PC.

And of course Sony's recent comments imply a shorter generation than most of us expected. I guess Sony just doesn't want MS to have a headstart like they did with Xbox 360. MS is likely going to transition as soon as 2026 because the Series XS is pretty much dying already.

I definitely feel like it will be in the 110-130 range. Not sure if it will surpass PS4 & Game Boy though, especially since Sony has said that PS5 is approaching the latter stages of its life. But I do think it should pass PS1 & Wii.

I think so too. And when Death Stranding 2 (or Kojima's complete new Stealth-Action-Game), Ghost of Tsushima 2, a new Naughty Dog game or GTA 6 comes out, there will be new records.

I'll risk and go with 110-130m, but I think it will barely cross 110m mark. Wouldn't be surprised if it won't

PS5 not beating PS4 is very possible, but even so, numbers still point at +110m consoles.

There are too many factors to consider here, to name a few:

The 2 consoles, PS5 and PS4, are too damn close in sales, i don't think ps4 will lead by +8M.
PS5 still has no price cut.
PS5 faced gigantic shortage due to COVID early in the gen.
PS5 has unprecedented number o crossgen titles with PS4. Many users are waiting to make upgrade. GTA VI, future PS exclusives and other games are going to fix this.

Xbox is likely becoming a 3°party, many gamers will making the jump to PS5.

I think+110M and under 130M is a safe bet.
