Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Super Mario Bros Wonder announced; all new 2D Mario (Update: Out now!)

Ok @zeldaring , we understand that you are a true gamer that needs every gaming experience to be the most challenging as possible to get you the most gamer points on the gamer scale but this does not invalidate in anyway that there's a category of well good games that can be designed to be more approachable (or easier as you say).

Challenge can certainly be a component as to why people may play a game but it's not the end-all of all criterias.

Many gamers choose easy/story mode cause they want that relaxing gameplay experience it's understandable. For me, if it only has that mode then i can't consider the gameplay good. yes i might enjoy it, but why would i say the gameplay is good? when it's  not challenging me or making me use my brain or learn gameplay mechanics at all, especially in a linear game thats not story driven the only thing i can think is you really enjoy the art and music.

I was talking about me though, I get that you have a different opinion, not need to keep repeating it.

I was hoping you could answer the question for me, on how a linear game thats has no skill  required gameplay and no story to be so fun. I'm thinking it has be the love for the art style  and music.

you must have missed where i said if game has a great story, puzzles and great world to explore, then i can see it being fun.

It's a huge leap to assume based on a like 2 minutes of introductory gameplay that Super Mario Bros Wonder won't require skill. 2D Mario games typically ramp up quite a bit as they progress.

I never assumed it would be. i was just talking about linear 2d and 3d platformers that are easy are not great games imo because they  really don't offer skill based gameplay in games that are mostly skill based. I enjoyed NSMWU BTW, especially the more challenging levels but tropic freeze is the best platformer by far not just cause of the challenge it has it all, graphics, music, and skill based gameplay with some relaxing levels mixed in.

Well, one example I enjoyed a lot was Kirby's Epic Yarn. I found the yarn-based gameplay to be quite satisfying even if its wasn't challenging because of how the yarn element was tied into the mechanics in creative ways, as well as the art style and music. I often play games to relax after work, so I really enjoyed just chilling out with Kirby in this cosy world.

yea i think a big part of it is you really enjoy the artstyle, music and characters. I'm not really a big fan of the artstyle for nintendo games. Although the music is phenomenal.

It was the gameplay too. It just felt really good to move around in and interact with its world. Challenge may be essential to you, but it's not the only way people gain enjoyment from gameplay.

Meh, personally couldn't care less how hard or easy it is as long as it's fun.
I enjoyed the heck out of games like Mario Galaxy or Kirby and the Forgotten Land that I found quite easy, and games like Donkey Kong Country Returns/Tropical Freeze which I found quite challenging.

For me, a game's quality rests on how good it feels to control, how creative and enjoyable the level design is, stuff like that, rather than how easy/hard it is.

To me  if you have those things and the game is too easy then it's bad level design. A game that requires little skill is what i call bad gameplay.

...you know you can dislike a game and still recognize it's a good product, but not for you, right?

I get if you like more challenging games, it's fine. but if a game is easy it absolutely doesn't mean it's a 'bad game with bad gameplay' lmao.

Like i said before if it has other things going for it fine, A nice world to explore, puzzles, and great story then i can recognize it's a great/good game but if you're gonna give me a game like racer, fast paced shooter, linear 2d/3d platformer then naw thats not good gameplay design for me. it's a gameplay focused game that doesn't require you to learn the mechanics, it's just my opinion of course. I mean many people think being too challenging is not good gameplay i'm not  gonna ask them change their opinion. i just present why i think challenge is good because it makes you learn the gameplay mechanics, and it's rewarding to see how much you improved while playing the  game.
