I own a rather large number of physical copies (probably about a thousand across all PS Gens and about 500 Nintendo/others), and even I have been buying more and more digital copies because it's just so much more convenient. And I have a PS Portal and you can't swap discs with that.
At this point Physical is a novelty. A shelf trophy. I love them and I'm so grumpy about them being discontinued as an option but be realistic.
And I find it so funny that people are being so bitchy with Sony for this in particular and are like 'oh let's boycott' like it's not just the direction the industry is going. Where are you going to go, eh? Xbox? They've been easing towards no discs too and rumours say their next console will be discless and are actually patenting technology to convert physical to digital. Nintendo has game key cards which are functionally digital only BUT with the added drawback of needing to swap a card. Steam has been discless/digital only for 20+ years and y'all love it.
So what exactly does anyone think they can do and why are they only getting grumpy at Sony about it?
Honestly, I would be on the same hate train if people weren't all saying 'we're gonna go to PC' like they aren't hypocrites for it. Because, again, STEAM has been digital only for decades and everyone (rightly) Loves it.
At this point I'm convinced people mostly just REALLY want to feel justified in their hatred and grumpiness. They need a target and sony opened themselves up for it by outright announcing their intention to do what has been inevitable for decades.
And to repeat, I hate it. I am a collector. I love physical copies, every wall in my house has shelves of games, movies, books, trinkets, and collectibles. I love displaying my collections, I LOVE physical copies. But it just feels so exhausting to see people so angry about something that has been written on the wall for 20 years, and the rage feels so damn hypocritical and inconsistent.

It doesn't have to be a "harsh decline" it just has to be appreciable. They're doing this because they think the higher margins will make it worth it, even if they lose some customers. Losing a million customers with nothing to show for it would be a bigger deal. Losing a million customers, but getting 30% better margins on the others, is totally okay though. |
"Losing a million customers with nothing to show for it would be a bigger deal."
^This right here^
It's not just about losing a meaningful number of customers, it's about losing them now, long before these new policies actually take shape. This will drive SNY to the question of, 'how much worse is it really going to get once this is physically... put into practice and everyone has to deal with it and the consequences?'
How SNY will react exactly we can't know, but doing nothing certainly means they won't take the verbal backlash seriously enough and won't think it through.
Maybe SNY backtracks to some degree, maybe they don't, but if they don't, they're taking a very very big risk and very well may pay for it. In which case, it won't only be the Corporation that pays for it, it'll also be "for the players" as well...

They are also losing a million of their more hardcore fans. The guys who will go out of their way to buy and collect Playstation games and systems. The guys other people go to for advice on what gaming system to buy. The guys who will talk a lot about Playstation online and help create hype. This will have a ripple effect for the brand.

Yup.
You might consider those gamers as the 'highest performing rocket engines'. Lose too many of them, and you're not going to make it to 'orbit'.
Then you'll need to remove items and features...to SLIM down the 'rocket'...in order to reach (the living room) 'space', to deliver the 'p(l)ayload'.
- San Mateo, we have a problem....
--We read you loud and clear PS(SR)6. Go ahead.
- San Mateo, we've lost too many engines. We're not gunna reach orbit.
--PS(SR)6, we're gonna have to patch you through to Japan to figure this one out.
- Copy that.

Looks like fun. I wasn't entirely sold on the original reveal back at the SOP, looked like a lot of flash.
Also the new previews for Phantom Blade have been really good. I also thought the initial showing seemed a little faked, but glad it's shaping up nicely. Sony has a good few months coming up with PB, GTA6 and Wolverine.
