I'm pretty sure that is the worst decision I've seem a gaming company ever make.

Nothing related to gaming I can remember has ever made me as angry before.

Playstation breaking record profits every year, it's not even a decision remotely based on need, it's pure greed and based on get as much control of the industry as possible.

Hopefully they're gonna get their just deserts and we'll laugh about it 👍

I don't think there's any coming back from an announcement of this magnitude like the PS3/PS Vita store shutdown attempt several years ago. This is something that Sony would have spent years building around the PS6. No longer manufacturing discs to prepare for the next-gen console would've been decided early in R&D. While it's currently unclear if they'll at least sell a disc drive separately for BC, it is clear that this was Sony's move to bridge the gap between console and their upcoming handheld. Their own version of Play Anywhere.

Even if by some miracle they backtracked, that's a lot of goodwill lost with the hardcore gaming crowd. Casual market won't bat an eye, but it's still a big "FU" to the gamers that have been with PlayStation for decades who were still buying physical, and always were going to.

Didn't Andy Robinson (very reliable) report like a year ago that PS6 was going to have a disc drive edition? It seems to me that the recent industry fuckery influenced Sony to change some plans.

Yeah, even if there is a total 180 as soon as tomorrow the plan won't change, it's in the open now, backfiring will at best hold it still for a bit more time.

Can someone explain to me why everyone's making such a big deal out of this? I've been on Steam for a very long time—I've had my PC games in digital format for at least 10 years, and they haven't disappeared; I still have them. What's the difference?

For me a hopefule outcome is

1. The rollout is delayed. PS5 deserves a decade of properly fulfilling the function for which it was promised when people bought it. PS5 discs should be produced until the end of the decade 2030.

2. Better consumer rights and protection for digital purchases/ownership.


It's a given the PS6 will not come with physical and I think that news alone wouldn't of been a shock, but more the news that they are literally not producing any more PS5 discs for any game released in a year and half.
