This is something that Sony would have spent years building around the PS6. No longer manufacturing discs to prepare for the next-gen console would've been decided early in R&D. While it's currently unclear if they'll at least sell a disc drive separately for BC, it is clear that this was Sony's move to bridge the gap between console and their upcoming handheld. Their own version of Play Anywhere. |
For me a hopefule outcome is
1. The rollout is delayed. PS5 deserves a decade of properly fulfilling the function for which it was promised when people bought it. PS5 discs should be produced until the end of the decade 2030.
2. Better consumer rights and protection for digital purchases/ownership.
It's a given the PS6 will not come with physical and I think that news alone wouldn't of been a shock, but more the news that they are literally not producing any more PS5 discs for any game released in a year and half.
