As I wasn't playing on console until Dreamcast and didn't own one myself until Wii and DS, I never saw or played on N64. So I never even heard of Doom 64. Until it got rereleased. It surprised me, as I thought I knew Doom iterations.

I played the original Doom incarnations, but Doom 64 I find personally better for my tastes. Levels had more recognizability than the first two, while gameplay still was working as before. The game is also much more full of secrets. And add to that a somewhat creepy atmosphere. This works well for me.

It is quite surprising the game wasn't made by id software, as it feels like the first two Doom games in many regards. But Midway very much captured the essence of Doom, while being able to inject their own identity.

It's probably for the best you never tried this game on N64. The modern re-release finally allows the greatness of this game to shine through, but the original N64 version takes a lot of getting used to. The controls are a bit counterintuitive and the default graphics settings are super dark.

Double post

#46 (incorrect guesses - Golden Axe, Okami, Beyond Oasis, Soul Reaver)
- Challenging, highly regarded old school Zelda-like that was exclusive to one of Nintendo’s rivals.
- Based on previous guesses - it was released during a generation after Golden Axe Warrior, after Beyond Oasis, and before Okami.
- Although this got a sequel, this series never expanded beyond the platform it originally appeared on. This particular game was made available digitally on later platforms from the same console manufacturer though.
- Much like one of Nintendo's game that this is similar to, this also came with a map and tips book.

#45
- If you fancy gifting something to one of the ladies you've met, you’ll have to make sure you get change from the owner when you get the chance. Who you'll be gifting it to will be dependent on if it's a new game or new game+.
- What was the likelihood that all these people with ties to each other would be in the same place at the same time?
- And what was the likelihood that our protagonist would solve everyone's problems in under 24 hours?
- The main motivation of our protagonist though, is to find out where his friend / ex partner may have been hyde-ing.

#44
- Who knew flatulence could be such a versatile tool?
- The attention to detail is incredible. No surprise given the creators of the franchise this is based on were involved throughout.

#43 (incorrect guesses - Super Smash Bros Melee)
- One of several iterations of an iconic game that saw the playable roster double from the number found in the original.
- Only half of that roster increase is playable for the first time here - the other half were playable in another version of the game released between this and the original.

#42
- The guy who helps you if you go out of bounds was best known previously for tossing things at you.

My list so far

@Mnementh and @Machina - all guesses are correct! (Stick of Truth for game #44)

Wrong thread for this.

Hint for 41: Arguably the father of the stylish hack-n-slash genre.

And another game to fulfill my strategy needs. Crusader King III let's you take the reigns of a monarchy. Once your main character dies, you can take over as your heir (if you have one). The game plays out over centuries.

And you need to take care of all a king or queen has to take care of: growing the economy to get more income, raise armies, help in the holy crusade, make alliance, marry off your children - hopefully in a way that secures you a good alliance. And conquering other regions.

You have a court of people following you: knights, nobility without their own controlled region, children of nobility. You can assign some to your council, to help out with your reign.

A major part of the game are plots. If it is difficult to defeat your foe on the battlefield, maybe a plot to assasinate them is helpful. Create a casus belli to gain the ability to invade elsewhere.

The game also has a mechanic for the culture and religion you follow. Both can give you boons and restrictions (religious rules to follow). There is a lot to possibly interact with, including creating your own culture or religion.

Overall a fun game, if you like to think about details and set long term course for your kingdom, only to see your plans crashing down in an unexpected event.
