And another game to fulfill my strategy needs. Crusader King III let's you take the reigns of a monarchy. Once your main character dies, you can take over as your heir (if you have one). The game plays out over centuries.
And you need to take care of all a king or queen has to take care of: growing the economy to get more income, raise armies, help in the holy crusade, make alliance, marry off your children - hopefully in a way that secures you a good alliance. And conquering other regions.
You have a court of people following you: knights, nobility without their own controlled region, children of nobility. You can assign some to your council, to help out with your reign.
A major part of the game are plots. If it is difficult to defeat your foe on the battlefield, maybe a plot to assasinate them is helpful. Create a casus belli to gain the ability to invade elsewhere.
The game also has a mechanic for the culture and religion you follow. Both can give you boons and restrictions (religious rules to follow). There is a lot to possibly interact with, including creating your own culture or religion.
Overall a fun game, if you like to think about details and set long term course for your kingdom, only to see your plans crashing down in an unexpected event.
