I know, during the Xbox one era Xbox was consistently selling less than 100 per week and now it's not unexpected when it sells 5K and has eclipsed 10K on a few occasions, it's more than surprising it is outright weird.

Yes, I've been wondering this as well.  While I love my Series X, to this point it's still nothing more than a souped-up XBox One since there are hardly any exclusive games for it so far.  I really don't understand how the Series is so much more popular in Japan when it really doesn't do anything more than the XBox One, which barely sold anything there, and it doesn't have any big Japanese games like the 360 had.

Game Pass has been around since 2020 in Japan, maybe it's just been a slow adoption of that? But even then, what games on Game Pass are hitting for Japanese gamers? Minecraft and Human Fall Flat are popular in Japan, but it's gotta be more than that I think....

Smaller, more compact, stylish, and easily available (specifically the series S) while offering most of the same games PlayStation offers. It’s possible Japan gamers are opening their options to Xbox.

Wow, I wonder why there was a rise with the console sales... you know "rise"? yeah...

Is Game Pass in Japan? If so that could be a main factor in the gains for Xbox in the region.

For some insight on the JP side, in order to buy a PS5, you have to go to a retailer's website and pull a "lottery" until you get one. Unfortunately, this has been going on for over a year and most PS5s are going to scalpers and outside of Japan (most notably China). So what happened was, the hype around the PS5 died down.
1. People got tired of spending hours on lottery, only to not get one
2. Boom in the fps genre, specifically Apex and Valorant shift to pc
3. There isn't a reason to get a PS5 rn, no good games from Japanese perspective, and exclusives goes on pc as well
4. Boost in Xbox's reputation with Xbox fanboys doing their best to promote it with the GamePass
5. Feeling abandoned by Sony for completely ignoring them and clearly focusing outside of Japan (moving HQ to California, focusing supplies elsewhere, etc.)

Since Nintendo treats them very well, you can see the results. Most decided to stop gaming, wait till they can get a PS5 or a good game to release, shifted to Xbox, shifted to pc.

It seems like every metric for Monster Hunter Rise vs World is down outside Rise > World sales in Japan.

10 million for MHW in 8 months (no expansion, limited XBO sales and first week PC)
10 million for MHR in 15/16 months (with an expansion release, strong base PC and Switch)
Lower west engagement (MHW ex Japan > MHR ex Japan)
Lower PC engagement (Lower Steam peaks for MHR)
Lower DLC engagement so far (2.5 million for a muted xbox one and PS4 release vs 2 million for PC and Switch)

Very nice week to start off the 2nd half of the year. If it was doable for the PS5 and Xbox Series to hit this level of sales at least somewhat consistently that would be great.

The advertising is probably a lot better. Maybe they're paying big Japanese youtubers to show it off.

When looking at the top 10 most played Japanese Xbox store games 6 are on gamepass with FH5 being the most popular and2 are free to play (fornite, fall guys)

Seriously, what's the deal with Gran Turismo 7? It's been bouncing all over the top 30 as of late.
